Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University opened up the home portion of their 2011 schedule with a 3-1 win over visiting Elms College in non-league women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Granger Soccer Complex.
The Cougars, who have won the last three meetings with the Blazers, improve their record to 1-1, while Elms sits at 0-1.
Clark opened up the scoring in the 18th minute when sophomore Janelle Pasternack (North Brookfield, Mass.) found junior Hannah Moriarty (Millbury, Mass.) at the top of the box and she floated a high shot over the Blazers' goalkeeper Haley Zisk's head for the early Cougar advantage.
The lead could have been more but Clark had trouble staying onside when scoring chances began to develop, getting flagged nine times in the first 45 minutes of action.
Things picked up considerably in the second half as the Cougars came out on the attack, peppering Zisk and her backup Jennifer Bouvier with 20 shots.
After Zisk made a pair of point blank saves on freshman Alex Stirgus (Seattle, Wash.) and another shot by sophomore Afra Danai (Amherst, Mass.) sailed high, it looked like the Blazers had survived the initial second half flurry.
But after an Elms foul, sophomore Jenna Zarou (Garden City, N.Y.) launched a direct kick from just outside the box that banged the crossbar and bounced past Zisk for a 2-0 Clark edge.
The Cougars found themselves on the board again after Zisk turned back Moriarty, but Lucia Pantuosco (Somers, Conn.) drilled home the rebound at exactly 75:00.
The Blazers answered back with their lone goal on a marker from Jennifer Killion at 80:23.
Zisk, who played the first 85 minutes of the contest, made 12 saves for Elms, who was outshot 27-5.
Clark will return to the field on Wednesday, September 7 when they host Wentworth, while the Blazers visit Mount Ida on Thursday, September 8.
