Box Score Rehoboth, Mass. – In another explosive offensive performance, visiting Clark University rolled to a decisive 8-2 win over Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Cougars extend their season-best winning streak to six straight to improve to 12-5 overall. After starting 0-4 in league play, Clark rallied to finish at 4-4, securing the upcoming conference tournament's fifth seed. The 12 wins for the Cougars are the most they have had since a 13-win season in 2004.
Wheaton, meanwhile, sees its season come to an end at 3-14 overall and 0-8 in league play.
Clark was led offensively by senior stars Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) and Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.), who combined for seven of the team's eight goals on the day. Melkonian finished with four tallies and Lutts tacked on three more and an assist – the second time in the last three games in which she has had that stat line.
Melkonian recorded her 22nd career hat trick in the first half and also became the NEWMAC's all-time leading scorer with 255 career points, surpassing the total of 249 accumulated by Nicola McGowan at WPI from 1988-91. Her 111 goals tie her for third all-time in Division III history with Danae Chambers of Messiah College (2001-04).
In addition, Melkonian's 32 goals this season ties her own single-season school record set back in 2010 and her 73 total points are the second-most in a single season in school history behind her 75 also set in 2010.
Lutts, meanwhile, is having a season for the ages. She has set career highs in goals (21), assists (14) and points (56). Her 14 assists ties a school-record for a single season set by Lisa Boyington back in 2000 and the 56 points and 21 goals both rank fourth on the school's single season list.
Freshman Danielle Auger (Wallingford, Conn.) collected her first career goal in the win, while classmate Kaylin Mulrooney (Somerset, Mass.) notched the first assist of her career.
Jordannah Saunders (Scarborough, Maine) made five saves to collect her 12th victory of the season in goal for Clark.
The Cougars will travel to Springfield for a first round matchup tentatively slated for Tuesday at a time to be announced.
