Box Score Norton, Mass. – Wheaton senior Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) scored a career-high four goals in the Lyons' 11-5 win over Clark University in the Pilgrim League opener for both Saturday afternoon at a soggy Mirrione Stadium.
Classmate Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass.) added three goals as the Lyons improved to 5-3 on the season (1-0 Pilgrim). Junior Sean Doherty (East Lyme, Conn.) dished out four assists while freshman Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and two assists.
Sophomore Jeffrey Wasson (Buckhorn, Ontario) – who entered the contest with a conference-leading 22 goals – netted three goals for the Cougars (4-3, 0-1 Pilgrim). It marked the sixth game this season in which he has scored three goals or more. Senior Phil Winslow (Providence, R.I.) recorded a pair of helpers.
Harrington scored the only goal of the first quarter when he converted a feed from Hillman into his ninth goal of the season at 8:28. Clark evened the score at one 42 seconds into the second on Wasson's 23rd tally of the year.
The Lyons closed the half with four-straight goals to take a 5-1 lead into halftime. Willauer recorded a natural hat trick with goals at 13:45, 7:23, and 5:09 before senior David Schroeder (Nashua, N.H.) potted his seventh of the year off a pass from junior Nik Hodosy-Brander (Santa Barbara, Calif.) with four ticks left on the clock.
Harrington scored his second of the game midway through the third to stretch Wheaton's lead to 6-1. Wasson answered with two goals in 52 seconds to bring the Cougars to within three at 6-3. Willauer's fourth of the afternoon with 90 seconds left in the quarter extended Wheaton's lead to four entering the fourth.
Harrington and Winslow traded goals to start the fourth before the Lyons sealed the win with three goals in a span of 3:40 – including two from senior Duncan Smith (Centerport, N.Y.). Doherty assisted on two of Smith's tallies. Clark senior Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) capped the scoring with his 11th with 2:08 remaining.
The Lyons outshot the Cougars 30-24, went 2-for-5 with the extra man, and forced 24 turnovers. Sophomore Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I.) recorded 10 saves to notch his fifth win this season.
Senior Andrew DeVito (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded eight saves and eight ground balls in defeat for Clark.
The Lyons travel to Regis (Mass.) on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. contest. The Cougars host Plymouth State Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
