Cougar Bats Silent In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. – Coast Guard All-American hurler Hayley Feindel (River Ridge, La.) returned to the lineup in impressive fashion, tossing a pair of complete game shutouts as the visiting Bears swept a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader from Clark University by scores of 10-0 and 4-0, respectively, on Friday afternoon.

In the process Feindel became the NCAA Division III all-time leader in innings pitched with 905 in her career breaking the record of 898 innings set by Megan Soultz of DePauw from 2007-2010.

She tossed a total of 12 innings on Friday, striking out 12 and walking just three in improving to 9-4 on the season. Coast Guard, meanwhile, moves to 16-10 overall and 4-4 in league action. Clark sees its record dip to 10-12 and 1-7 in conference play.

Game one started out with the Bears scoring three runs on just one hit in the first inning highlighted by a double steal in which Chloe Harmon (Escondido, Calif.) swiped second and Jesse Richardson (Kent, Wash.) stole home.

Richardson was back in the middle of Coast Guard's five run uprising in the second, pushing across two with single down the left field line. Other runs came home on a Stacia Sarwinski (Grove, Okla.) sacrifice fly, a Holli Bastinck (Wayne, N.J.) single and a Harmon double to center.

The Bears scored an unearned run in the third then tacked on the tenth run in the fourth on a Kaitlin Ward (Saline, Mich.) single to center.

Clark got a leadoff double from Maureen Coakley (Worcester, Mass.) in the third but she was stranded there after Feindel retired the next three batters.

The Cougars also had an excellent scoring chance in the fourth, when Erin Murphy (Boxboro, Mass.) singled to short and Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.) doubled, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Feindel then got the next three Clark batters out on three consecutive pitches to end the threat.

The seventh was no different as the Cougars got a leadoff base hit by Coakley but Feindel struck out the next three batters – all swinging – to end the game.

Game two saw the Bears grab a 1-0 lead in the third on a Bastinck double to right center. The game stayed that way until Devin Fellman (New Port Richey, Fla.) homered to right field off of Clark starter Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine), making the score 2-0.

Coast Guard extended their edge to 3-0 in the sixth when Jaime Kim (Irvine, Calif.) doubled home Sarwinski, who reached on a base hit of her own to start the frame.

Clark mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of infield singles with two outs, but Feindel managed to get a groundout to end the inning.

Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) took the loss in game one for the Cougars, while Buckheit took the defeat in game two.

Bastinck, Fellman and Sarwinski all had three hits in game two, while Coakley and Murphy had two hits each in game one for Clark.

The Cougars will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they visit Wheaton, while the Bears visit Wellesley.
