Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Sophomore scoring machine Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute to lift host Clark University to a thrilling 2-1 win over visiting University of New England in non-league men's soccer action on Wednesday.
Zapata took a feed from Josh Demers (Warwick, R.I.) and found the back of the net at 104:20, more than 85 minutes after the last goal in the game was scored.
The conversion for Zapata marks the second time in his career that he has scored a goal in the second overtime period, having notched the game-winner in a 2-1 win over Eastern Nazarene a season ago. It also ended a night of near misses for the second-year forward who had two shots - one in the 83rd minute and the other in the 95th minute - just miss giving the Cougars the lead.
Things started off extremely well for Clark as Kent Vorland (Kristiansand, Norway) served a free kick into the box that Zachary Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) headed home for a 1-0 Cougar advantage less than three minutes into the contest.
The Nor'Easters got the equalizer in the 18th minute when Zack Bunnell (Amesbury, Mass.) collected a loose ball in the box and blasted home his first tally of the season.
Clark controlled play, holding a 24-9 edge in shots, forcing UNE netminder Aidan McParland (Brookville, Ontario) to make ten saves.
In addition to Zapata's near misses, Demers hit the post at 17:59, moments after Bunnell's game-tying goal and Segura also had a shot smack iron at 86:29.
The Cougars have now won three straight matches heading into Saturday's NEWMAC opener against Babson College.
