Pride Roars Past Clark, 5-0

Springfield, Mass. – Springfield College's Drew Sommer had a goal and three assists, leading the host Pride to a 5-0 win over visiting Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Springfield improves to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Cougars fall to 3-7-1 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

It's the first time since 1968 that the Pride has tallied eight wins this quickly, just 10 games into the season.

Sommer assisted the game's first goal, scored by Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) in the seventh minute.

Just 45 seconds later, in the eighth minute, Sommer tallied a goal of his own, assisted by Michael Fowler (Maynard, Mass.).

John Mankus (Vernon, Conn.) gave the Pride a 3-0 lead with a goal in the 26th minute with help from Sommer and Tyler Allen (Southbridge, Mass.). Sommer sent a pass out to Allen on the right wing, then Allen sent a long cross to the back post where Mankus netted the header.

The Pride took a 4-0 lead before the half ended when Matt Dickmann (Paxton, Mass.) headed in a goal on a cross pass from Sommer into the right side of the net.

The final Springfield goal came with 32:20 remaining in the game when sophomore Austin Vico (Plymouth, Mass.) dribble the ball upfield, centered a pass to Dickmann, who one-touched it to senior Scott Morneault (Bristol, Conn.).

Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) combined for four saves in goal for Springfield. Alistair Richardson (Tolland, Conn.) and Alfonso Alvarez had seven saves for Clark.

Springfield will play on back-to-back days, traveling to Elms College on Sunday for a non-conference match at 4:00 p.m.

Clark hosts Mount Ida on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
