Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Clark University got a goal and an assist from reigning New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer offensive player of the week and the host Cougars collected a key 2-1 league win over Mount Holyoke on Tuesday evening.
The win for the Scarlet and White improves their record to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in conference action while the Lyons dip to 5-7 and remain winless in league action at 0-4.
Things started off quickly and the Cougars had an excellent chance in transition in the eighth minute when Lucia Pantuosco (Somers, Conn.) played give and go with Haley Connors (Burrillville, R.I.). Connors served a perfect ball to Pantuosco at the top of the box but her shot banged off the crossbar and was cleared away by the Lyon defense.
Clark broke through in the 21st minute, however, when Pasternack set up Pantuosco for her third marker of the season for a 1-0 Clark edge.
Mount Holyoke had a good opportunity to get on the board in the 29th minute when a cross by Kara Singleton (Parsonsfield, Maine) found the foot of Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H.) but a defender was draped on her and her shot from inside the six-yard box sailed high over the crossbar.
Pasternack then gave the Cougars a two-goal advantage in the 40th minute when she took a feed from Emma Lynch (Pawtucket, R.I.) and ripped a low blistering shot for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.
It looked as if Pasternack was going to add another goal in the 71st minute when she lofted a shot from the right flank that had Mount Holyoke goalkeeper Alyssa Tabrisky (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) moving back but she was able to deflect the shot away with her outstretched hand.
The Lyons finally got on the board a few minutes later when Ann Shaffrey (Charlottesville, Va.) was left alone at the top of the box and her high rising shot was just over the fingertips of Clark netminder Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.), making the score 2-1.
Clark actually had a chance to extend to a 3-1 lead when, after some confusion on the part of the Lyon defense, a ball was left rolling through the box and found its way to Lynch, but her shot sailed high.
The Cougars held sizable advantages in shots (18-9) and corner kicks (13-4), while Tabrisky and starter Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont.) combined to make nine saves.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday with conference road games slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. Clark travels to MIT, while the Lyons head to Wellesley.
