Homers Help Cougars Get Split With WPI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Northampton, Mass. - Clark blasted four homeruns – including two from Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and the Cougars settled for a split with crosstown rival WPI with the Engineers stealing the first game 5-4 while Clark blanked WPI 11-0 in the second game.

WPI is now 5-9 overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC action.  Clark improves to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

In the first game of the nightcap, WPI was down 4-2 heading in to the bottom of the seventh.  The Cougars had jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second when Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.) and Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) recorded hits for Clark.  They were able to maintain the lead with a homer from Amatucci in the top of the fourth, while keeping WPI at one run for four innings.

WPI's bats took charge in the seventh, recording three hits to take the lead.  Freshmen Jacquelyne DiTroia (Andover, Mass.) and Andrea Boxell (Marlboro, Mass.) each tallied a hit to start the Engineer rally and McDonough's no-doubt blast to left field gave the Crimson and Gray their first NEWMAC win.

Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, Mass.) and DiTroia chipped in two hits while McDonough added two RBIs.

Senior Christa Coscia (Lakeville, Mass.) recorded her fourth win of the season, now 4-3, hauling for all seven innings and recording three strikeouts. Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.) shouldered the loss for Clark throwing for the last part of the seventh inning.

In the second game of the day, Clark's defense shut down WPI. The Cougars allowed no runs and threw three double plays to silence the Engineers.  Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.), Amatucci and Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) each posted three hits on the day and combined for four RBIs.

Despite striking out ten, Clare Doolin (Newton, Mass.) took the loss throwing for all six innings, while Hayley Buckheit (Camden, Maine) earned her second win of the season with two strikeouts and no runs earned.

WPI returns to action tomorrow with a double-header at Wheaton, while Clark takes on Smith.
