Box Score 2 Fort Myers, Fla. – Powered by fantastic collegiate debuts by a few members of the Class of 2016, Clark University erupted for ten runs in the nightcap to earn a split in the season-opening doubleheader on Sunday morning at the Lee County Sports Complex.
The Cougars (1-1) dropped the opener 15-6 to Dominican (Ill.) University, but Clark banged out 14 hits in the nightcap 10-1 victory over Regis College.
In the opener freshman Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) had three hits and two RBI, while classmate Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) had three hits of her own to go along with three RBI.
Down 6-0 after two innings, Clark trimmed the Stars lead down to 6-4 after the third, but a three-run blast by Kaitlin Barajas in the fourth ignited the Dominican offense to the 15-6 win.
In the nightcap, the Cougars wasted little time getting on the board, pushing across six runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by two runs singles by both Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.) and Molly Clark (North Kingstown, R.I.).
Clark tacked on three more runs in the third when Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) drove in two with a base hit and Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) pushed another run across on an infield single.
With the huge early lead, Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) was stellar in the circle, scattering six hits and just run while striking out two.
The Cougars will play two more games on Monday, beginning with a 1:00 p.m. start against Wartburg College.
