Cougars Open Up League Play With 6-3 Win Over Bears

Worcester, Mass. – In a much anticipated rematch of a 2012 New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinal, host Clark University posted an impressive 6-3 win over Coast Guard in NEWMAC men's tennis actin on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars, who have won their conference opener for consecutive years, improve to 6-5 overall, while the Bears dip to 2-7.

Clark opened up by winning two of the three doubles matches, as Diego Angel (Lima, Peru) and Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) topped Robert Renfrow and Blake Maurer, 8-5 at No. 1. They were followed by Dan Hall (Sutton, Mass.) and Harris Rollinger (Lexington, Mass.) knocking off Andrew Bryson and Jon Lightner, 8-4 at No. 3.

Coast Guard's lone doubles win came at No. 2 where Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna defeated Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio).

Angel led the way in singles action, collecting a 6-0, 6-1 win over Renfrow at No. 1, while Stein bounced back with 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Maurer at No. 2.

The Bears picked up win at No. 3 and No. 4 where Guentert dropped Martin, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 and Fortna rolled past Fernando Pinoargote, 6-1, 6-1.

It took three sets, but Goodstein knocked off Bryson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 and Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.) finished off Lightner, 6-1, 6-4.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday as Clark visits Wheaton and the Bears host Springfield.
