Cougars' Offense Keeps Clicking In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fort Myers, Fla. – Clark University hitters banged out 24 hits and their pitchers didn't allow a run as the Cougars swept a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex.

Clark defeated Wartburg College 6-0 before blanking Penn State-Behrend 14-0 to improve to 3-1 so far on their spring break trip. After dropping their first game to Dominican University, the Cougars have outscored their last three opponents 30-1.

In the opener, Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.) had a pair of hits and two RBI. Clark jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, getting RBI singles from freshmen Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.), Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) and Marisa Linehan (Middleboro, Mass.).

Things stayed that way until the fourth when the Cougars tacked on three more runs, highlighted by a Chunis two-run double.

While the Clark bats stayed hot, Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) was just as effective, allowing just six hits in picking up her first win of the season.

In addition to Chunis, Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) had two hits and a pair of runs scored in the opener.

Things went pretty much the same in the nightcap, as Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored from her leadoff spot and freshman Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had two doubles and three RBI.

Clark wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard, pushing a pair of runs across in the top of the first. Allen led off the game with a double to left center and immediately came around to score on a Melkonian single to center. Moments later she crossed the dish on a Chunis sacrifice fly.

The Cougars big inning came in the third when they scored seven times as they got run scoring hits from Kraytenberg, Linehan and an RBI double from Derosier to spark the offense.

Five more runs crossed the plate in the fourth on the strength of a Wright RBI double, a Kraytenberg single, a Derosier two-run double and a Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.) run-scoring single.

Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.), meanwhile, was extremely effective for her second straight outing, going five innings, allowing just six hits and striking out four.

Clark is back in action on Tuesday with games against Kenyon College and Wilmington College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
