Cougars Rally For Twinbill Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fort Myers, Fla. – After allowing just one run in its last three games, Clark University gave up a combined seven runs in Tuesday's doubleheader earning a twinbill split with Kenyon College and Wilmington College at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

The Cougars dropped a 5-2 decision to Kenyon before rallying for an extra inning win over the Quakers, 3-2 in the night cap.

Kenyon got an excellent pitching performance from leadoff hitter Maddy Stark, holding hot-hitting Clark to just four hits in collecting a complete game victory.

She actually ignited the Ladies' offense with a leadoff single in the first and then she came around to score the first run of the game on Emily Prehoda's single.

Kenyon pushed three runs across the plate in the third, highlighted by RBI singles from Toni Miller and Liz Paterra to make the score 4-0.

Both of Clark's run were unearned, coming in the third and fourth. In the end, however, Stark was the difference as she retired the final ten batters she faced to secure the win.

Molly Clark (North Kingstown, R.I.) had two of the Cougars' four hits, while Veronica Shader (West Brookfield, Mass.) and Corrie Desrosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had the others.

The nightcap against Wilmington proved to be an interesting one. The Quakers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when the Cougars believed they had the third out of the inning at home, but a quick-thinking Brooke Byrne who stole second, raced all the way around to score the game's first run.

Things stayed that way until the seventh when Clark took advantage of a pair of Wilmington errors and got RBI from Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) to take a 2-1 lead.

An error actually helped the Quakers tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Cougar hurler Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) buckled down with a runner on third, got the final out of the inning to escape without anymore damage.

Clark took the lead in the extra inning when, after Melkonian was placed on second, Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) doubled to the gap putting the go-ahead run on the board.

Meuse, who was terrific all day, retired all three Quakers she faced in the eighth to collect her third win of the season.

Wright, who had the game-winning double in the eighth, went 3-for-4.

The Cougars wrap up their spring trip on Wednesday with games against Northland College and a rematch with Kenyon College.
