Cougars Wrap Up Florida Stay With Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fort Myers, Fla. – Clark University wrapped its stay at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with its second consecutive doubleheader split, topping Northland College 9-2, before dropping a 6-5 extra-inning affair with Kenyon College on Wednesday morning.

The Cougars finish their trip 5-3 and are now off until a road contest at Bridgewater State on Friday, March 22.

In the opener, Clark scored three runs in both the third and the fourth inning to race out to a 6-0 lead before settling for the seven-run victory.

In the bottom of the third, Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.) cleared the bases with a three-run double, and in the fourth the Cougars got RBI from Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) and Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) and scored another on an unearned run.

After a two-run single in the fifth by Northland, Clark tacked on a single run in the bottom of the frame on a Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.) RBI double.

The Cougars wrapped up the scoring in the sixth when Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) brought home Allen with a triple and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Wright.

Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) was strong in the circle again, tossing a complete game while scattering nine hits and striking out five.

Clark looked as if it had a sweep in hand in the nightcap with Kenyon after Veronica Shader (West Brookfield, Mass.) blasted her first collegiate homerun in the top of the sixth to give the Cougars a 4-3 lead.

The Ladies evened the score in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI base hit by No. 9 hitter, Danielle Elizarraraz.

With Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) on second with no outs in the top of the eighth, Amatucci came through again, delivering an RBI single to right, marking the second straight day in which she collected an extra-inning RBI.

Kenyon, however, was able to rally behind starting pitcher Maddy Stark's performance in the batter's box.  Emily Prehoda scored from second on Toni Miller's single to left to tie the game at five and then after a walk and a single to center the bases were loaded for Stark. The sophomore hurler, sent a single to left that scored Elizarraraz with the game-winning run.

Stark had a major hand in giving the Cougars two of their three losses on this trip. Earlier in the week she tossed a complete four-hitter in a 5-2 Kenyon win and in this contest she struck out eight to pick up her third win of the season.
