Lyons Take Two From Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. – Wheaton College banged out 22 hits and held Clark University to just one run and the visiting Lyons reached the 20-win plateau for the third time in the last four seasons with a doubleheader sweep of the Cougars in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action on Sunday afternoon on O'Brien Field.

Wheaton won the first game 8-0 and then took the nightcap 4-1 to improve to 20-12 overall and 9-3 in league play, while Clark has dropped seven of its last eight games and now sits at 12-14 and 4-10 in conference action.

Game One: Wheaton 8, Clark 0

Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass.) did it all for the Lyons in the opener, allowing just two hits and blasting a two-run homerun in leading Wheaton to the shutout victory.

Berardi gave up hits to Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) and Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) in the first and then went the final six innings without allowing another as she improved to 2-4 on the season.

Wheaton took a 3-0 lead in the third and then saw that lead jump to 5-0 in the fourth on RBI hits by Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I.) and Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla.).

After a double steal in the fifth saw the Lyons push across another run, Berardi launched her second roundtripper of the season in the seventh to give Wheaton some insurance runs.

Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) took the loss for the Cougars, going four innings and allowing five runs – only three of which were earned.

Six of the Lyons nine hits were for extra bases, including Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass.) and Erin Deneen (Framingham, Mass.) each smacking a pair of doubles.

Game Two: Wheaton 4, Clark 1

Clark got a gutsy pitching performance from Hayley Buckheit (Camden, Maine) but the Lyons prevailed 4-1 behind a strong pitching performance of their own from Allison Baker (Orange, Conn.).

Buckheit worked her way out of trouble in the first three innings, keeping Wheaton scoreless. She found herself with the bases loaded and nobody out in the third when she was able to induce back-to-back grounders to Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) at third, who was able to get a pair of force outs at home. She they got another easy groundout to escape the inning without any runs scored.

Wheaton, however, finally broke through in the fourth when they scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead. That lead moved to 2-0 when Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H.) drove in another run with an RBI single.

Clark cut the lead in half when they scored their first run in five games on a Veronica Shader (West Brookfield, Mass.) solo blast to left field in the fourth.

Wheaton tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh on RBI hits by Timoteo and Berardi.

Hart, Brillion and Berardi all had three hits in the nightcap in support of Baker who went the distance to pick up her tenth win of the season.

Clark had six hits in the second game, led by Shader's 2-for-3 performance.

The Cougars will return to the diamond on Friday when they play their final home contests of the season against MIT.

Wheaton, meanwhile, will host Roger Williams on Tuesday.
