Angel Named NEWMAC Singles Player Of The Week

Babson Park, Mass. – For the third time in his career, Clark University senior Diego Angel (Lima, Peru) has been named New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis singles player of the week it was announced on Monday.

In a 3-0 week for the Cougars that secured a berth in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament for the second straight season, Angel was a perfect 2-0 playing at No. 1 singles.

He topped Alex Werchaldo of Rhode Island College 6-0, 6-4 on Monday and then bested Springfield College's Benjamin Burnap with relative ease, 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday.

In addition to his two singles victories, he was a perfect 3-0 in doubles action, including picking up a win at No. 2 doubles for the first time in his career.

Angel teamed up with Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) to post a pair of doubles wins, first ousting Werchadlo and Ben Proctor on Monday with an 8-1 score. Then only playing doubles in Clark's 8-1 win over Bridgewater State on Tuesday, Angel and Martin rolled past the Bears' Wesley Esthimer and Sean Bleau, 8-1.

He then wrapped up his busy week playing at No. 2 doubles for the first time in his career and joined forces with Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) to knock off the Pride's Alex Orban and Zac Goldstein, 8-1 on Sunday.

Angel and the rest of his teammates embark on another match-filled week when they travel to Providence for a meeting with Johnson & Wales and then visit Brandeis on Friday and Babson on Saturday.
