Cougars Bow Out To Babson, 5-2, In NEWMAC Semifinals

Cambridge, Mass. – In the second semifinals match of the 2013 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis tournament, Babson College defeated Clark University in a close, back-and-forth match by a score of 5-2.

The Beavers improved to 11-7, and advanced to the finals of the championship tomorrow against top seed MIT, while the Cougars ended their season with a record of 11-9.

Babson earned the first point of the day in No. 3 doubles when senior Mitchell Henry (Wellesley, Mass.) and freshman Saif Rahim (Hong Kong) had an 8-5 win over seniors Harris Rollinger (Lexington, Mass.) and Dan Hall (Sutton, Mass.).

Babson's No. 2 pairing of freshmen Roberto Perez (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) and Victor Vu (Los Angeles, Calif.) won over sophomore Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) and junior Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) with a score of 8-4.

At No. 1, Clark's duo of senior Diego Angel (Lima, Peru) and freshman Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) walked away with an 8-5 victory over sophomores Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica) and Connor DeFiore (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.). Doubles ended with a score of 2-1 in Babson's favor.

In the No. 1 position for singles, Babson's Perez won against Angel with a score of 6-2, 6-3 and, at No. 2, the Beavers' Vu defeated Stein, 6-0, 6-2. Clark earned its second point of the day at No. 3, when Martin had a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Doyley. Babson's Henry had a 6-1, 6-1 win over freshman Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) at No. 4.

At No. 5, Babson's DeFiore won the first set against sophomore Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.), while Burger clinched the victory in the second with a score of 4-3. The rest of the match went unfinished. To end the match, Babson's freshman, Davin Garcia (Essex Junction, Vt.), won his first set against sophomore Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn.), 6-2, and the second with a score of 5-1 before the rest of the set was aborted.

Babson will face host MIT at the finals of the NEWMAC tournament tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
