Cougars Collect Split With Bears

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

New London, Conn.- Down by four runs, visiting Clark rallied for a key 7-5 win in the second game to salvage a split of a NEWMAC doubleheader with Coast Guard on Friday afternoon. Tatiana Chunis came through with the go ahead two run single in the top of the eighth for Cougars who improved to 9-5. The win over the Bears is the first for Clark since 2008.

Game One: Coast Guard 5, Clark 3

Freshman Kristine Kahl (7-4) worked seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run (three total) on five hits while walking two and striking out two as the Bears took the opener by a score of 5-3.

The Bears got on the board first by scoring three unearned runs off Clark senior Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) highlighted by Morgan Kingston got the Bears' first hit of the inning, a two-out single to right.

Clark would get all three runs back in the top of the fifth as their 7-8-9 hitters notched consecutive one-out singles. The big blow in the inning came courtesy of a two-run single by freshman Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) that turned a 3-1 Coast Guard lead into a 3-3 tie.

After surrendering the lead, the Bears would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth. With Kingston on first, junior Kaitlin Ward launched a two-out triple to right center to give Coast Guard a 4-3 lead.

The Bears would add an insurance run in the sixth with a lead-off home run by freshman Hannah Ingerson.

Game Two: Clark 7, Coast Guard 5 (8 innings)

In the nightcap, Clark took advantage of nine Coast Guard errors to rally from a 4-0 deficit en route to a 7-5 extra-inning win.

Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) went a career-best eight innings for the Cougars to improve to 4-1 on the season, allowing just two earned runs.

As they did in the first game, the Bears struck first scoring the game's first four runs including a two-out RBI double by Kelly Grills.

Clark answered back in the fifth, taking advantage of five errors in the frame to score four runs. The first came on a Veronica Shader RBI double, followed by run-scoring base hits by Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) and Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.). Melkonian then scored the game-tying run later in the inning on the inning's fifth error.

No more runs would be scored until the eighth inning. Allen was placed on second – per the International Tie Breaker rule – before errors to the first two batters of the inning loaded the bases for Clark. The errors would come back to haunt the Bears immediately as Chunis stroked a two-run single to left to give Clark their first lead of the day. The Cougars would tack on another in the inning, this time on a wild pitch with two away which allowed Wright to score.

Chunis and Marisa Linehan (Middleboro, Mass.) were the only Cougar to get hits in each game.

Clark will continue its six-game in three-day stretch with a twinbill against league rival Springfield College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
