Cougars Held Scoreless In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Springfield, Mass. – Springfield College used a combination of powerful pitching and timely hitting and the host Pride held Clark University scoreless in sweeping a New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Springfield, who has now won four straight overall and seven in a row against the Scarlet and White, won by scores of 6-0 and 5-0 in improving to 10-12 overall and a league-best 5-1 in conference action.

Clark, meanwhile, sees its ledger drop to 9-7 after dropping back-to-back games for just the second time this season.

The Pride wasted little time getting control of the opener, pushing across two runs in the bottom of the second on the strength of a Jenna Webb two-run blast off of Cougar hurler Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.).

They added another in the second on an RBI double by Elizabeth Joseph and two more in the fourth on run scoring hits by Kelly Blake and Christina Leader.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Joseph continued her mastery of the Clark lineup, tossing five innings of one-hit ball while striking out 11 batters. In three career games against the Cougars, Joseph is 3-0 and has 21 strikeouts and yielded just ten hits.

Things didn't get any easier for Clark in game two, as Ashley Marino handcuffed the Cougar batters, allowing six hits while striking out nine in the complete game victory.

Marino, who no-hit Clark last season, got all the run support she would need in the first inning as Blake led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an error. Another unearned run later in the frame had the Pride ahead 2-0 and two more runs came across in the second, including one on an RBI single by Leader.

Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.) came in to relieve Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) and did an effective job, tossing the final 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits and no runs.

Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) and Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had the Cougars only hits in game one for Clark and Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Allen and Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) each had two hits in the nightcap.

The Cougars will continue its six games in three day stretch when thy step out of conference to face Worcester State on Sunday at Rockwood Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
