Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University put an end to Bridgewater State's five match winning streak with a resounding 8-1 win over the visiting Bears in non-league men's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
The Cougars improved to 9-6 with the victory, while Bridgewater State sees its record move to 8-2.
Clark got the ball rolling in doubles action, sweeping all three matches starting with Diego Angel (Lima Peru) and Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) having an easy time at No. 1 with an 8-1 win over Wesley Esthimer (Franklin, Mass.) and Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.).
Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio) topped Eric Johnson (Kingston, Mass.) and Hung Huynh (Worcester, Mass.) 8-2 at No. 2 and Dan Hall (Sutton, Mass.) and Harris Rollinger (Lexington, Mass.) ousted Matt McLeod (Leicester, Mass.) and Alex McGannon (Fairhaven, Mass.) 8-1 at No. 3.
The Cougars continued their impressive play with five wins in singles matches. Stein improved to 4-0 all-time at No. 1 singles as he defeated Esthimer, 6-3, 6-1.
Martin posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 over McLeod, while Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn.) collected a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass.).
Rollinger was victorious at No. 4 with his 6-2, 6-3 decision over Bleau and Phillip Porter (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) wrapped up the Clark wins with a 6-4, 6-3 win over McGannon.
Bridgewater State picked up its lone win of the day at No. 5 where Johnson outlasted Hall, 7-5, 6-3.
The Cougars will face a stiff test on Friday when they visit Brandeis University, while the Bears host Suffolk University on Thursday.
