Box Score 2 Babson Park, Mass. – Playing in their second tri-match in as many weeks, Clark University split its pair of contests, dropping a hard-fought 3-2 NEWMAC decision to host Babson College before rallying for a 3-1 win over Westfield State on Saturday at Staake Gymnasium.
Game No. 1: Babson College 3, Clark University 2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-15, 25-19, 15-12)
The Beavers trailed 2-0 after the first two sets but the hosts rallied to take the match with a thrilling come-from-behind win.
Even in the fifth set, the Cougars led the entire game until the final two points that sealed the match for Babson.
The Beavers' Krissy Robertson was superb against the Cougars, compiling 13 kills and hitting .462, while also posting a team-high 34 assists and 12 digs.
First-year Lorraine Mackiewicz and sophomore Mary Donahue chipped in with 15 and 13 kills, respectively for the Beavers.
Junior Brianna San Diego had a match-high 26 digs to lead the defense, while sophomore Elizabeth Sullivan contributed 19 digs and classmate Angela Price had 23 assists and a match-high six service aces.
Clark was led by 14 kills and 13 digs from sophomore Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) and a match-high 37 assists from senior Rachel Spera (North Hollywood, Calif.).
First-year Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, Calif.) also chipped in with 10 kills, 18 digs and three blocks in the win.
Game No. 2: Clark University 3, Westfield State 1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-20)
Clark rallied after losing the first set to win the next three on its way to a 23-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-20 triumph.
Glass-Smythe, Rowe and junior Mel Conde (Union City, Calif.) each had 11 kills, Spera had a match-high 40 assists, and first-year Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led all players with 23 digs for the Cougars.
Senior Lindsay Rescott (Northport, N.Y.) had a match-high 20 kills to go along with nine digs, while Warner had 10 kills and 17 digs. Cote contributed 38 assists and nine digs for the Owls, who dropped to 9-7 with a pair of losses on the day.
Clark (7-8) will return to action on Tuesday when they return to New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action with a home contest against MIT. That contest will be the program's first-ever Autism Awareness night, where they will raise money to help with research and wear special Autism Awareness bands prior to the game.
