Paolini Shines But Cougars Fall 2-1 In OT

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Freshman Nicole Miko (Saddle River, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal late in the first overtime and visiting MIT rallied for a 2-1 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The win for the Engineers is their fourth straight after going the previous four games without a win. They now sit at 8-3-2 overall and remain undefeated in league contests at 4-0-1. The Cougars meanwhile have now dropped back-to-back overtime decisions to league opponents after picking up their first win and are now 1-11 overall and 0-4 in conference games.

Things started out well for the Scarlet and White as took an early 1-0 lead when Charlotte Mays (Melrose, Mass.) outraced her defender up the right flank and then beat a charging Lauren Ullman (Princeton, N.J.) to the ball. With Ullman out of goal and near the top of the box Mays sent her shot into the lower left corner of the goal at 20:55.

MIT had several chances to score in the first half but Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) was up to the task, including making a spectacular save with her body on a shot by Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn.) right before Mays put the Cougars ahead.

Midway through the second stanza, the Engineers finally got on the board when Elena Gianotas (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) sent a corner kick into the box and Julia Goupil (Los Altos, Calif.) rose above and banged home the equalizer in the 64th minute.

Later, Paolini stood tall again, this time in the waning seconds of regulation when a penalty kick was called after an MIT player was taken down inside the box. With seven second left, Michelle Battapaglia (Katonah, N.Y.) had her potential game-winning kick denied by a sprawling Paolini, forcing overtime.

MIT seemed poised to end the game with three minutes left in the first overtime when Krishnamachar fired a shot but there was Paolini again, and she made a leaping, diving save.

Moments later however, Morgan Moroi (New Albany, Ohio) sent a ball across the box that Miko blasted into the upper middle of the goal with 1:02 left in overtime sending them to their third straight win over Clark.

The Engineers held an 18-2 edge in shots on goal and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Paolini was outstanding between the pipes for the Cougars, turning back a career-high 16 shots.

Ullman, meanwhile, needed to make just one save and get one team save to earn the victory.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with NEWMAC home contests. MIT entertains Wellesley at 4:00 p.m., while Clark plays host to Springfield at 6:00 p.m.
