Springfield Gets Past Cougars, 3-0

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Freshman Kimberly Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored a goal and added an assist to propel Springfield College to a 3-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Tuesday evening at the Granger Soccer Turf.

With the win, the Pride pushes their winning streak to three straight and improve to 7-3-2 overall and more importantly stay in the thick of the race for the top seed in the upcoming league tournament with a 4-1-1 conference ledger.

The Cougars meanwhile, have dropped three straight and now sit at 1-12 in head coach Brienne Smith's first season.

Clark actually had an excellent chance to take a lead in the 33rd minute. Katherine Swierk (Saugus, Mass.) worked a ball free from a Springfield defender inside the box and the rolling ball found the foot of Emma Deneault (Holden, Mass.). Her blast from just outside of the six-yard box was turned aside, however, by Pride netminder Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).

Moments later, Quiles put Springfield on the board when she converted a cross from Jessica Miller (Southbury, Conn.) at 34:27 for her third goal of the season.

The Pride doubled their lead in somewhat dramatic fashion as time wound down in the first half. Springfield scrambled to put together a corner piece and their quick work paid off when Quiles sent her kick into the box and Brooke Hattinger (Weymouth, Mass.) rose above the Clark defenders to head home her fifth marker of the year at 44:47.

Miller played the role of playmaker again in the 62nd minute when she setup Krissy Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) on a cross that Cicalis tucked into the upper right corner at 61:45.

The Pride held a sizable edge in shots (22-9), but only eight were on frame.

Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) stopped five shots for Clark, while Gillett turned aside three and her backup – Holly Ouellette (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who played the final 15:03, registered one save of her own.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday with NEWMAC road contests. Clark travels to Babson while Springfield visits Emerson.
