Engineers Spoil Senior Day

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) and teammate Joshua Wilson (West Chester, Pa.) each recorded hat tricks as MIT handed host Clark a 7-0 defeat in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon on the Granger Soccer Turf.

The win for the Engineers snaps a five match winless streak and aids their league playoff hopes, improving to 5-4-4 overall and more importantly, 2-3 in conference contests.

For the Scarlet and White, meanwhile, the loss is their second straight and they now face an uphill battle as they search for their first postseason appearance since 2009.

Things opened up quickly for the visitors as Bingham found Wilson for the game's first marker at 13:21. Bingham flicked a ball to a streaking Wilson who went in and scored with a low left-to-right shot that got past the outstretched arms of Alistair Richardson (Tolland, Conn.).

A quick restart after a Clark foul by MIT saw Bingham send a ball up the field for Austin Freel (San Diego, Calif.) but he was tackled inside the box. Bingham then converted the ensuing penalty kick to put the Engineers ahead, 2-0.

Clark's (5-9-1, 1-3-1) best scoring chance of the half came in the 42nd minute when Vinny Morra (East Setauket, N.Y.) took a pass at the top of the box on the right side a fired a shot that Jake Amereno (Commack, N.Y.) corralled with both hands diving to his left.

Bingham notched his second goal early in the second half when he found himself inside the box with a defender on his back. He made several moves before sending a low shot into the left corner at 62:11.

A little more than two minutes later Bingham completed the hat trick when Jason Adler (Scarsdale, N.Y.) took the ball at midfield, dribbled down the left flank, cut in towards the box and sent a cross to the right side that Bingham was able to control with one foot and then tap home for his league-leading tenth goal of the season.

Ahead 4-0, MIT added another score five minutes later when Gregory Hui (Alameda, Calif.) fed Wilson for his second goal of the contest.

Wilson then completed his hat trick with an unassisted tally in the 78th minute and then the Engineers added the game's final score when Marco Cunqueiro (Bronx, N.Y.) found Nikolas Albarran (Buffalo, N.Y.) for his fourth career goal at 84:45.

MIT held a 23-10 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Clark's netminding combination of Richardson and Willie McDonald (Norwell, Mass.) recorded seven saves while Amereno made two stops to post his third shutout of the year.

The Engineers' victory spoiled senior day for the Scarlet and White's Class of 2015 – Vaske Gjino (Worcester, Mass.), Maxwell Lopez (Oakdale, N.Y.) and Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) – all of whom were honored before the contest.

The Cougars have little time to lick their wounds as they play host to Emmanuel College in a non-league affair on Monday at 8:00 p.m. MIT is off until Wednesday when they step out of conference as well with a trip to Framingham State for a 3:00 p.m. start against the Rams.
