Lyons Tame Cougars On Senior Day, 3-0

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J.) scored a pair of goals and Wheaton College spoiled Senior Day at Clark University with its fourth consecutive shutout in a 3-0 win over the Cougars in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Granger Soccer Turf.

The win for the surging Lyons is their fourth straight, improving their record to 11-6-1 overall and 5-3 in conference action. For the Cougars, meanwhile, the loss is their fifth in their last six games and they slip to 2-14 and at 1-7 in league contests, have officially been eliminated from postseason contention.

Wheaton had an excellent chance to get on the board in the 12th minute when Kelsee Howes (Maynard, Mass.) got behind the Clark defense and fired a shot that went right to left but Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) was able to make a sliding save.

The Lyons finally broke through in the 21st minute when a Cougar turnover deep in its own end found the foot of Corigliano and she blasted a rocket into the upper right corner from just inside the 18-yard box at 20:34.

Things stayed that way until the second half but the Scarlet and White came upon their best scoring chance of the contest late in the first half. Nikki Feinberg (San Antonio, Texas) sent a corner kick into the box that Kara Fischer (Belmont, Mass.) was able to rise up and get a head on. The ball got past Wheaton keeper Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo.) but a Lyon defender was there to clear the ball of the line.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 55th minute when Corigliano converted a penalty kick with a low shot into the left corner after a handball was called deep inside the box.

Wheaton tacked on an insurance goal in the final ten minutes when Kaitlyn Montoya (Placentia, Calif.) scored after splitting the Clark defense at 81:49.

The loss for Clark spoiled another outstanding performance in goal by Paolini, who turned back 14 shots – including several acrobatic stops in each half.

The Lyons peppered the Clark defense all afternoon long, firing 37 shots – 18 of which were on goal.

Hinton, needed to only make one save to secure her fifth shutout of the season, extending Wheaton's shutout streak to 377:27.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with conference contests. The Lyons visit Babson, while the Cougars entertain crosstown rival WPI.
