Cougars Sweep Doubleheader In Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fort Myers, Fla. – A day after a pair of tough losses, Clark University bounced back with a doubleheader sweep over Newbury College and Wilmington College.

The Cougars rallied for a 4-3 walkoff win over the Nighthawks in the opener and then rolled to a 7-1 win over Quakers.

In the first game, Clark took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led off the frame with a triple and then scored on a Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) sacrifice fly.

Newbury College then scored three runs in the top of the sixth, snapping a stretch of ten straight batters retired by Cougar hurler Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine).

Down 3-1, Clark scored another run in the bottom of the sixth when Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) singled home Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.) who led off the frame with a walk.

The game-winning rally was started when the Cougars loaded the bases as Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and that was followed by walks by Buckheit and Dusseault. Another walk – this one by Molly Clark (North Kingstown, R.I.) – evened the score.

Derosier then sealed the win with a game-winning fielder's choice.

Both Wright and Derosier each had a pair of hits and Buckheit (1-1) and Dusseault combined for five walks and two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Clark scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take control of the contest with the Quakers. Allen had an RBI single, Kraytenberg had a two-run single and Mackey drew a bases loaded walk in the inning.

The Cougars tacked on two runs in the fourth on a Derosier bunt single and an RBI hit by Allen, giving Clark a 6-0 lead.

After Wilmington scored on an Erika Lee single to center, Derosier drove in Clark with a sacrifice fly.

Dusseault was strong in the circle for the Cougars, going seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run to pick up her first collegiate victory.

Derosier was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Allen was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI of her own.

The Cougars will return to action on Monday with contests against Cedar Crest and Bluffton University.
