Cougars Get Crucial Sweep Over Coast Guard

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University got a pair of solid pitching performances and the offense banged out 23 hits en route to a key doubleheader sweep over league rival Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon at O'Brien Field.

The 4-2 win in the opener and the 6-4 victory in the nightcap pushes the Cougars' record to 9-15 overall but more importantly 4-8 in conference games – a full game ahead of the Bears, who now sit at 10-16 and 3-9 in league matchups.

Game 1: Clark 4, Coast Guard 2

The Cougars broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on three hits to take control of the contest. Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) delivered the big blow, smoking a two-run triple to the right centerfield fence, scoring both Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) and Melanie Dusseault (Londonderry, N.H.). Derosier herself crossed the dish on an infield hit by Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.).

Coast Guard finally got a run back in the sixth when Chrerokee Strickland singled with one out and then scored on a Kelsey Gray base hit to right.

Things got really interesting in the seventh when Morgan Kingston led off the frame with a hard double to left. Erin Lisko moved her over to third on a sacrifice and a ground ball to Wright at short looked to be enough to get another run for the Bears but Wright decided to throw home and with the help of an excellent tag by Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Kingston was called out at home.

Clark starter Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) was then able to strikeout Erin Reynolds to end the game.

Coast Guard actually got on the board first in the top of the third when Kingston led off with a single and then stole second. She eventually scored on a stinging single to center by Jessie Richardson.

The Cougars knotted the game in the bottom of the inning when a pair of infield hits by Dusseault and Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) coupled with an error, pushed across an unearned run off of CGA hurler Kristine Kahl.

Coast Guard out-hit the Cougars (9-8), with Richardson going 3-for-4 with an RBI and both Gray and Kingston each getting a pair of hits.

Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.) and Wright each had two hits for Clark.

Game 2: Clark 6, Coast Guard 4

The Scarlet and White had 15 hits – their most since returning from Florida back in March – with No. 3 and No. 4 hitters Wright and Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) combining to go 6-for-7 at the plate.

Things started out fantastic for the visitors as they built a 3-0 lead after two innings. Coast Guard scratched a run across in the first when a Richardson double scored Kingston, who led off the game with a single to left.

They tacked on two more runs in the second on run-scoring singles by both Kingston and Kelly Grills.

Clark clawed back with two in the third, highlighted by a Wright double down the right field line. The other run came off of the bat of Kraytenberg, who drove in Wright with a single through the right side.

The Cougars were back at it in the fourth, as Buckheit got things going with a single to left. Dusseault moved her over and she came around on Allen's double to right. Wright followed that up with a double of her own scoring Allen and then Kraytenberg sent Wright home with a single to right.

Down 5-3 in the sixth the Bears worked some two-out magic to close the gap. Reynolds singled to center and the Hannah Ingerson doubled to left over the head of Buckheit, making the score 5-4. Dusseault, however, was able to get Gray to pop up to end the threat.

Clark got that run back when Mackey opened up the sixth with a ringing double to left and then scored on a Chunis sacrifice fly to right.

Dusseault then shut the door in the seventh, retiring the Bears in succession to end the game and give the Cougars their first wins over Coast Guard since a doubleheader sweep back in April of 2008.

Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit for Clark, led by Mackey and Wright each getting three.

The Scarlet and White will look to continue its winning ways with a twinbill against MIT on Tuesday, while Coast Guard plays hosts to Springfield on Tuesday as well.
