The Cougars will need to win their final four contests – two on Saturday at Emerson and then two at home against MIT on Monday – and still get some help.
Game 1: Babson 10, Clark 2
Babson erupted for five runs in the third inning on their way to the 10-2 win. After Madison Dinaso collected an RBI on a groundout in the second, the Beavers sent ten batters to the plate in the third, banging out six hits including a towering two-run homerun by Caitie Benoit .
Clark got on the board in the bottom of the frame when Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) singled home Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.) who led off the inning with a walk.
Two more Beaver runs came across in the fourth when Katie Guido tapped a blooper over the head of Wright at short and both Emily Morris and Lindsey Schmid scored.
Babson kept coming and in the fifth they added another run on a Rachel Bullard double to left that scored Dinaso.
Clark tried to keep pace, pushing a single run across in the fifth off of reliever Megan Hayes. Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) reached on an infield single and Dusseault drew a walk. Buckheit got to third and then came home on a Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) groundout.
Back-to-back singles by Morris and Schmid coupled with consecutive wild pitches from Buckheit plated the game-sealing run after Hayes retired Clark in order in the bottom of the sixth.
Babson outhit Clark 15-4 led by Guido and Morris who each had three hits, while Bullard, Megan Merullo and Conway had two hits each.
Wright was the only Cougar to collect multiple hits, going 2-for-3 from her No. 3 spot in the order.
Game 2: Babson 6, Clark 2
Schmid went 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI to lead the Beaver attack in the nightcap. Consecutive singles to open the second by Morris and Schmid and a sacrifice by Guido, put a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out. The first run came across on a wild pitch by Dusseault and then Conway drove in Schmid with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Clark answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) single to left that scored Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who led off the inning with a single to center.
Clark had a golden chance to take the lead in the third when they put the first two runners of the inning on, but Conway worked her way out of trouble by getting Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) to foul out, Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.) to fly out and Amatucci to groundout to end the inning.
Babson took advantage of their good fortune immediately when Schmid blasted a deep two-run shot to left, upping the Beaver lead to 4-1.
Another great scoring chance for the Cougars went by the wayside in the fourth when Dusseault and Allen had back-to-back singles with one out. Derosier singled to right but Dusseault was thrown out in between third and home and Allen got caught in a rundown between second and third to end the inning.
The Cougars finally got the elusive second run in the fifth when Kraytenberg singled to center, scoring Wright who led off the inning with an infield single.
Babson tacked on two runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Merullo and Morris.
Conway was effective again in the circle, tossing four innings, scattering eight hits, while the 4-5-6 hitters (Morris, Schmid and Guido) for the Beavers went a combined 6-for-10.
Clark did register 11 hits led by Allen, who went 3-for-4 from her leadoff spot and Derosier who was 2-for-4.
Babson will return to Worcester for a meeting with WPI on Saturday whole the Cougars travel to Boston for a showdown with Emerson.
