Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Boston, Mass. – Visiting Clark University got a pair of stellar pitching performances – including the first career complete game shutout from Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.) – and two homeruns from Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) on their way to a doubleheader sweep over Emerson College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action on Saturday.
The Cougars took game one by a score of 3-2 before notching the 5-0 shutout in the nightcap to improve to 11-17 overall and 6-10 in conference games. By virtue of Smith's win this afternoon over Coast Guard, however, the Cougars have been eliminated from postseason contention.
Game 1: Clark 3, Emerson 2
The Lions actually outhit the Cougars, 9-8, but Clark never trailed en route to the one run win. In the top of the third, the Scarlet and White pushed across a pair of runs on a Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) groundout and an Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) RBI double.
Clark starter Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) worked out of bases loaded, no out trouble in the third. She got consecutive force outs at home and then a fly out to left to keep the game at 2-0.
The Cougars then went ahead 3-0 when Kraytenberg smacked a homerun to center with one out in the sixth.
That run proved to be difference as Emerson scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Brittany Rockford.
The Lions then put the game-tying run on with one out in the seventh, but Buckheit was able to induce a game-ending double play.
Game 2: Clark 5, Emerson 0
In the nightcap, Clark scored single runs in the first and fourth before pushing three runs across in the fifth to take the game.
Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) led off the game with a double and then came home on a Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) single to center.
As Allen did in the first, Kraytenberg led off the frame with a double and she then scored on a single to center by Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
Clark broke the game open in the fifth when Kraytenberg blasted a three-run homer to center.
Dusseault was strong in the circle for the Cougars, allowing just four hits in collecting her sixth win of the season.
The Cougars will return to action on Monday with a doubleheader against MIT. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
