Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – MIT took advantage of nine Clark University errors and then rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth in game two to win both ends of a doubleheader from the host Cougars on Monday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
The Engineers scored three runs in the first on their way to a 3-1 win in the opener and then erased a two-run deficit in game two, winning the nightcap, 5-3.
All eight of the runs MIT scored on the afternoon were unearned while Clark - despite banging out a combined 21 hits in the two games, never got the big one, stranding 26 baserunners in the twinbill.
MIT 3, Clark 1
In the opener the Cougars stranded 14 runners and committed five errors which led to all three MIT runs in the 3-1 loss. Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich.) scattered ten hits in the circle for the Engineers while striking out ten batters en route to her sixth win of the season.
After a walk, a fielder's choice and two errors gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead, Karly McLaughlin (Edwardsville, Ill.) added to it with a two-run double to right center that made the game 3-0 in the top of the first.
Clark's chances to score came early and often beginning in the bottom of the first when Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) legged out a one-out triple but she was left stranded at third.
The Cougars had another excellent opportunity in the second when Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) singled and then Tatiana Chunis (Sutton, Mass.) doubled, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Fodor was able to get back-to-back strikeouts and after a walk to Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.) loaded the bases, she got Maya Allen (Concord, Mass.) to foul out to end the inning.
Clark loaded the bases again in the third with one out but Fodor buckled down again, getting Chunis to strikeout and Shawna Amatucci (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to flyout to right to end the inning.
Finally, in the sixth, the Cougars struck when Derosier laid down an excellent bunt and beat out the throw to first that sailed high, allowing her to go to second. She then came around when Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) singled to center.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Clark put runners on second and third with two outs but relief pitcher Mackenzie Donnelly (Helena, Mont.) was able to strikeout Dusseault to end the game.
Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) was the tough-luck loser, yielding just six hits and no earned runs for the Cougars.
No Engineer had more than one hit, while the Scarlet and White saw Derosier go 3-for-4 and Wright, Kraytenberg and Chunis all get two hits.
MIT 5, Clark 3
The Engineers pushed across four unearned runs in the top of the sixth to steal a game that Clark seemed to have in control for most of the contest.
Chunis put the Cougars ahead in the bottom of the first when her two out single to left brought in both Wright and Allen, giving the Scarlet and White a 2-0 lead.
Clark had a chance to pad their lead in the third when Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) doubled to deep center to lead off the inning but she was stranded at third after Donnelly was able to get three straight groundouts to end the inning.
MIT finally got their first hit off of Dusseault with two outs in the fourth and then got a run in the fifth on a double to left center by Natalie Shifflet (Poway, Calif.).
Clark got that run back in the bottom of the frame on a single up the middle by Amatucci, making the score, 3-1.
With one out in the sixth, MIT started its comeback when a single by McLaughlin, coupled with K.K. Wopat (Edwardsville, Ill.) reaching on an error, put runners on the corners. Wopat got caught in a run down, but kept it going long enough so that McLaughtlin could scamper home.
Now with two outs and runners on the corners again, Monica Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) cracked a two-run double, giving the Engineers a 4-3 lead. Another run came home on a throwing error, making the score 5-3.
The Cougars put runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh, including bringing the go ahead run to the plated with two outs in the seventh, but Donnelly was able to induce Dusseault into a game-ending popup.
Allen had three hits to lead the way for Clark, while both Wright and Mackey had two hits apiece.
Natalie Shifflet and McLaughlin had two hits for MIT.
Both teams will end their season on Tuesday. MIT visits Salve Regina, while the Cougars will play host to Brandeis.
