Box Score 4 Salisbury, Md. – On the cusp of going 2-2 at the ultra-competitive Salisbury University Opener, Clark University saw the host Sea Gulls rally from a 2-0 deficit to stun the Cougars, 3-2 to send the Scarlet and White home with a 1-3 ledger in four games over the weekend.
Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was named to the all-tournament team as she had four excellent performances from her libero spot.
Clark will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Eastern Connecticut State to face a Warrior team they have defeated in consecutive seasons.
Match 1: Stevens Institute of Technology 3, Clark University 1 (16-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-25)
Facing a perennial NCAA Tournament team, the Cougars found themselves locked up with the Ducks 1-1 after the first two sets but Stevens rolled to victory in the final two sets in convincing fashion, taking the third 25-17 and then the deciding set, 25-15.
Stevens, who won 27 matches a season ago and were picked to win the Empire 8 this season, were led by a ten-kill, 11-dig performance from Mary Tobin and 32 assist showing from Ashley Castillo.
Clark got ten kills and eight digs from Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) and a match-high 23 digs from Cattaneo.
Match 2: Swarthmore 3, Clark University 1 (25-19, 9-25, 19-25, 16-25)
Clark opened the match strong, taking the first set 25-19 but Swarthmore raced back to win the next three to take match.
The Garnet received a pair of excellent all-around performances from freshman Sarah Wallace and junior Sam DuBois. Wallace totaled 17 kills and 15 digs, while Dubois added 18 assists and 12 digs.
Glass-Smythe led the Cougars with eight kills and 11 digs and Savonnah Rowe (New York, N.Y.) added six kills of her own. Cattaneo chipped in with 15 digs and Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, Calif.) and Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) each added four kills.
Match 3: Clark University 3, Mount Aloysius 1 (28-26, 25-19, 22-25, 25-14)
Clark finally broke through to earn their first win of the season with a closer than you think 3-1 win over the Mounties.
They won the first two matches by relatively close scores before Mount Aloysius won the third, 25-22. The Scarlet and White responded and cruised in the fourth, taking the match with a 25-14 decision.
Match 4: Salisbury University 3, Clark University 2 (25-23, 25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 7-15)
Playing against a team that won 29 matches a season ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, the Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead after winning the first set 25-23 and the second 25-22 as they collected 31 kills in their best hitting performance of the tournament.
That all came to a screeching halt the rest of the way, however, as the Sea Gulls rattled off three straight set victories behind a raucous home crowd.
Salisbury began their comeback with a 25-15 win in the third and then forced the fifth and deciding set with a 25-23 triumph in the fourth.
In the fifth, the hosts raced out to an 11-2 and never looked back completing the comeback with a 15-7 victory.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Katie Stouffer finished with 32 kills on .426 hitting to pace the Sea Gull attack while Alexis Howatt handed out 57 assists.
Glass-Smythe turned in another double-double for the Cougars, finishing with 15 kills and ten digs and Sanford added one of her own with 14 kills and 12 digs.
Cattaneo corralled 21 digs and Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) handed out a career-high 29 assists.
