Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Worcester State got a goal and an assist from Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, Mass.) and the visiting Lancers won its third straight match with a 2-0 decision over host Clark University in non-league women's soccer action on Saturday at the Granger Soccer Turf.
The win for WSU is their fifth straight over the Cougars dating back to the 2011 season and improves their overall record to 4-1. Clark, meanwhile, slips to 0-5 in 2014.
Worcester State opened the game on the attack and looked poised to take an early 1-0 lead when Macomber had her shot sail wide. It was pounced on by Kaleigh Evans (Saugus, Mass.) but her shot was saved by Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.). The rebound, however, bounced right back to Evans – but again, Paolini was able to make the save.
The Lancers finally broke through in the 31st minute when Macomber sent a direct kick into box that made it through traffic and found Margo Clifford (Attleboro, Mass.) who headed home the game's first marker at 33:02.
Clark had an excellent chance to score late in the opening stanza when Kara Fischer (Belmont, Mass.) fired a shot that got past Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, Mass.) but the Worcester State defenders were able to recover and send the ball out of the box as the final seconds of the half ticked away.
Early in the second half Macomber split a pair of Clark defenders and was one-on-one with Paolini when her first attempt was turned aside. The rebound came right back to her and she tucked in a soft shot into the lower left corner before the defenders caught up with the play.
Down 2-0, Clark had one final chance to get on the board in the 86th minute when a foul at the top of the box left Emma Denault (Holden, Mass.) with a direct kick. Her shot, however, sailed just over the crossbar as Witkowski notched her second shutout of the season.
Amazingly, the Lancers never got a corner kick, but held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
Paolini stopped six shots in goal for Clark, while Witkowski had four of her own.
The Scarlet and White will return action on Tuesday with a road contest at Keene State.
Worcester State resumes play next Saturday when they host MCLA in their MASCAC opener.
