Clark Sprints Past Wildcats, 3-1

Box Score

Providence, R.I. – Clark University bounced back from Saturday's heartbreaking defeat to post an impressive 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 25-14) win over Johnson & Wales in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Wildcat Center.

For the third straight match, Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) posted a monster double-double, this time finishing with a match-high 21 kills and 14 digs for the Cougars who improved to 5-6 on the season.

In the first set, JWU raced out to a 10-3 lead on a kill by junior Kellen Tensen (New Canaan, Conn.).  Clark responded, however and tied the game at 13-13 after a JWU miscue.  The visiting Cougars then used a 7-3 run, capped by a kill by Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, Calif.) for the 20-16 advantage.  Clark then held on for the 25-21 win and the 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set saw the Wildcats take command early and never looked back. JWU held a 19-9 lead after a service ace by junior Paula Cadavid (Pawtucket, R.I.) and cruised to the 25-18 win that would knot the game at 1-1.

The third set saw a back and forth affair with the score tied 19-19 on a service ace by junior Kaitlin Kuntz (Boone, Iowa).  A kill by Alyssa Drapeau (Biddeford, Maine) tied the game at 23-23, but Clark closed out the set with the final two points, including a set-sealing service ace from senior Kaitlyn Stuck (Bourne, Mass.).

The fourth and final set had Clark use a 10-3 run midway through the set, capped by a kill by Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) for the 17-10 lead.  The Cougars then held on for the 25-14 win for the set en route to the 3-1 victory in the match.

Cadavid paced Johnson & Wales with 13 kills and eight digs while Tensen notched 40 assists and 18 digs in the setback. Drapeau added a double-double with 12 kills, 15 digs and three blocks for the Wildcats.

Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) had her second straight strong setting effort, totaling 42 assists and seven digs in the win, while Glass-Smythe hammered home ten kills for the Cougars.

Clark will return to action on Saturday when they host a challenging tri-match that features conference foe Babson and Amherst. The Cougars will face Babson at 11:00 a.m. and Amherst at 3:00 p.m.
