Box Score Biddeford, Maine - Vinny Morra (Setauket, N.Y.) converted a rebound in the 64th minute for the lone goal of the evening, as Clark University defeated the University of New England, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match played Thursday evening at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
Neither team had many quality scoring chances until the midway through the second half when Alberto Polo-Herrera (Arlington, Va.) put a shot on goal that UNE keeper Jake Rostkowski (Rockport, Mass.) denied with a diving stop. Morra came up with the rebound and directed a shot just inside the left post for his first goal of the season.
The Nor'easters had several opportunities to tie the game in the final 15 minutes but were unable to notch the equalizer. Tyler Garnick's (Derry, N.H.) blast from the top of the box slid just over the crossbar in the 76th minute, and Dan Good (Hampden, Maine) was denied from close range by Clark goalkeeper Alistair Richardson (Tolland, Conn.) seven minutes later.
With under 30 seconds remaining, Erik Holmqvist (Gothenburg, Sweden) sent a shot just left of the frame.
Richardson had five saves to record the shutout for Clark (4-8-1), which held a narrow 15-13 margin in shots. Rostkowski finished with eight saves for UNE (2-12-0) in his first collegiate start.
Both teams are back in action Saturday with road conference games. The Cougars head to MIT for a 1:00 p.m. start, while the Nor'easters play at Wentworth in a tilt that gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
