Offense Erupts In Record-Setting Win Over Hawks

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Powered by an offense that set a new school record for goals scored in a game, host Clark University christened its new field in style, rolling to a convincing 23-4 win over Worcester-area rival Becker College on a cold but sunny Saturday afternoon in non-league men's lacrosse action.

The Cougars (1-0) who shifted their home field to a new synthetic surface about 100 yards away from their old home, erupted for the record-setting performance behind 11 different goal scorers, including freshman Will Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.), who found the back of the net five times in addition to handing out three assists.

It also marks the third straight season in which the Scarlet and White have won their season opener and is the second time in their last three games dating back to last season that they have scored 20 goals or more.

A familiar duo – Rob Holden (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Nick Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) - got the Clark offense off and running less than two minutes in as Holden scored the first of his three markers on the day.

The Cougars built their lead to 4-0 after the first as Johnson, John Goracy (Lumberton, N.J.) and Ian Daly (Wantagh, N.Y.) all recorded unassisted tallies.

Clark kept its foot on the gas in the second period as Keegan Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) found Daly, Johnson set up Holden, and Mandracchia netted the first of his career with help from Goracy.

Goracy fed Johnson for another Clark score and then turned around and took a pass from Callahan for his second of the day.

Mandracchia found the back of the net two times in a little more than a minute to keep the offense humming along and then Darius Jagminas (East Greenwich, R.I.) let fly a rocket that whizzed by Jeffrey Candee (Madison, Conn.) with a little less than two minutes to play in the quarter.

Alex Turgeon (Holden, Mass.) got in on the act when Mandracchia assisted on his first score of the season, giving the Cougars an incredible 13-0 halftime edge.

Becker snatched the momentum in the opening minutes of the second half when Daniel Johnson (Plymouth, Mass.) beat Drew Riopelle-Tyrell (Northville, Mich.) for the Hawks' first goal 1:26 into the third quarter.

After nearly a seven minute stretch without a goal, Clark answered with three straight to end the frame as Holden completed his tenth career hat trick off of a pass from Johnson and then Mandracchia scored two more – the last coming off of a fantastic feed from Daly, upping the Clark lead to 16-1 after the third.

Alex Rossman (Newington, Conn.) connected with Johnson for his second of the day moments into the fourth on a man-up marker, but Lucas Petricone-Berg (Nyack, N.Y.) tickled the twine less than two minutes later.

Another Hawks' goal – this one an unassisted score from Blake Boutiette (Burriville, R.I.) – was followed by five straight from Clark as Goracy netted the final goal on his seventh hat trick in just his 16th career game, Petricone-Berg added another, Andrew Myhre (Middlebury, Vt.) collected his first of the year and Kyle Elkins (Stow, Mass.) potted two in a row.

After Johnson scored his third of the game for Becker, Matthew Sullivan (Brunswick, Maine) set the record with the second goal of his career.

As you would imagine, Clark controlled the stat sheet, holding sizable advantages in shots (38-14) and groundballs (59-31). The Cougars were also excellent special situations, scoring five goals in five extra-man opportunities, and with Ryan Marsh (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) in complete control at the faceoff "X" while scooping up a game-high eight groundballs, Clark won 23 of 28 attempts.

Mandracchia finished with a game-high eight points (five goals, three assists), Goracy added three goals and three assists and Johnson registered six points of his own (two goals, four assists).

Bryan Parsons (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was all over the field for Becker, totaling eight groundballs and two caused turnovers while teammate Jonathan Ferreira (Warwick, R.I.) chipped in with three groundballs and four caused turnovers.

Clark's defense was effective all afternoon, forcing 31 turnovers and holding the Hawks to just 12-for-28 in clear attempts. Will Roberts (Paxton, Mass.) was one of the catalysts for the Scarlet and White, causing four turnovers and collecting three groundballs, while Patrick Burke (New Canaan, Conn.) joined in with an assist, six groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Riopelle-Tyrell, making his first appearance in a Cougar uniform, was strong between the pipes, ending with five saves overall before giving way to Jacob Reiner (Farmington, Conn.) and Daniel Marcus (Boca Raton, Fla.).

Candee was peppered with shots all afternoon long, stopping six of them in his 50-plus minutes of action before giving way to Anthony Jordan (West Hartford, Conn.), who gave up six goals in a little more than nine minutes of action.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday. Becker plays host to UMass-Boston at 3:30 p.m., while the Cougars travel to Clearwater, Fla. to face off of against DeSales University at 6:30 p.m.
