Cougars Split With York And Bluffton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fort Myers, Fla. – Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) doubled home three runs in the third and scored the game-winning run in the sixth as Clark University settled for a doubleheader split on their second day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic.

The Cougars (1-3) opened the day with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over York College before suffering an 8-0 five inning loss to Bluffton College in the nightcap.

In the win over the Spartans, the Scarlet and White found themselves down early after Payton Hill doubled in a pair of runs to highlight a three-run first.

Clark answered back in the third when Leah Bodin (Andover, Vt.) led off the inning with a single and Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) then loaded the bases with a single of her own, setting the stage for Kraytenberg who smoked a bases-clearing, game-tying double.

With Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) holding York at bay in the circle – she retired the final 11 batters she faced – the Cougars pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. Kraytenberg doubled to lead off the inning and she came around to score the game-winning run on an Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) single.

Buckheit pitched well for Clark, tossing seven innings, allowing just five hits and three earned runs to pick up her 16th career victory.

Both Kraytenberg and Wright each had a pair of hits to highlight the offensive attack.

In the nightcap, Bluffton jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in collecting their second shutout win of the day.

After an unearned run kicked off the offensive outburst in the first, Carley Levindofske blasted a two-run homer to center in the second and another unearned run made the score, 4-0.

Three more runs came across in the third as Brittany Baker drove in a run with a double to center.

Bluffton ended the game in the fifth when Levindofske pushed across another run with a groundout, making the score 8-0.

Clark could only muster a pair of hits in the game – singles from Buckheit and Gonzalez – as Emily Kolezynski handcuffed the offense over five effective innings.

The Cougars are back in action on Monday with games against Kenyon (11:00) and Wartburg (1:00).
