Box Score Worcester, Mass. – MIT scored six of the game's final eight goals and the visiting Engineers continued their hot play as of late with a 10-8 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
The win for MIT is their fourth in their last five games, sending them to an impressive 9-3 overall and more importantly, they now sit at 2-1 in conference contests. For the Cougars, meanwhile, they are 6-5 and have dropped three of their last four, slipping to 1-2 against league opponents.
Things started out in excellent fashion for the Scarlet and White as they got on the board a little more than two minutes into the contest when Keegan Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) setup Ryan Moore (West Hartford, Conn.) for his fifth tally of the season.
Rob Holden (East Longmeadow, Mass.) then doubled that lead almost exactly a minute later when he ripped a shot past Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) just 3:14 into the game.
The Engineers responded immediately as Luke Verdi (Aliso Verde, Calif.) recorded an unassisted score and then Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y.) connected with Michael Traub (Middletown, Md.) for the equalizer at 5:54.
MIT then went ahead early in the second quarter when Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) found Verdi open for another score.
The momentum swung back into Clark's favor when Peter Christiansen (Seattle, Wash.) assisted on Holden's second of the day and then Nick Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) fed Ian Daly (Wantagh, N.Y.) for a man-up goal, giving the Cougars a 4-3 edge.
Stolzenberg and Traub teamed up to even the score midway through the period but Clark struck back with two goals as Christiansen assisted on a Jack Goracy (Lumberton, N.J.) rocket and then Johnson helped Jon Spencer (Hollis, N.H.) find the back of the net, making the score 6-4.
MIT fought back before the period ended with Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) and Cook netting goals in the final 3:30 to send the game into halftime tied at 6-6.
The Engineers controlled the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 3-0 and Stolzenberg had a hand in all three. First, he scored a man-up goal and then followed that up with an unassisted marker a little more than two minutes later. He capped off the game-changing period with an assist on Davis' team-leading 29th goal of the season.
Trailing 9-6, Clark inched closer with the Moore-Callahan tandem scoring less than a minute into the fourth. With a little less than six minutes left, Christiansen tightened the gap with his goal, making the score 9-8.
After each team had a possession that resulted in no goals, MIT got the game-sealing goal from Verdi as he fired a shot the banged off the post and found its way into an empty net with 1:08 to play.
Both goalkeepers played well with Clark's Drew Riopelle-Tyrrell (Northville, Mich.) making 15 stops and the Engineers' Bartell turning aside 12.
Verdi finished with his first hat trick of the season for MIT, who also got a game-high five points from Stolzenberg (two goals, three assists).
For Clark, Holden and Moore each had two goals, while Callahan, Christiansen and Johnson all handed out two assists.
Both teams are back in action with NEWMAC contests on Wednesday. MIT plays host to Emerson, while the Cougars visit Massachusetts Maritime.
