Cougars Can't Get Over The Hump Against The Bears

New London, Conn. – Sarah Sorensen threw a pair of complete games and freshman Emily Dow led the Coast Guard offense with four hits and three RBI as the host Bears swept Clark 9-3 and 7-3 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday.

Coast Guard snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 11-11 overall and 3-7 in the NEWMAC while Clark dropped to 2-16 overall and 0-8 in league play.

In the opener, senior Kelsey Gray had RBI singles in both the second and fourth innings before Dow added an RBI double in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

Clark got on the board in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) and an error allowed a second run to score making the score 3-2.

Coast Guard blew the game open with six runs in the sixth. Dow and senior Jessie Richardson had RBI singles before junior Morgan Kingston's two-run double pushed the lead to 7-2. Freshman Emma Hvozdovich capped the inning with a two-run single for a 9-2 lead.

Kraytenberg added an RBI single for Clark in the seventh to close the scoring.

Sorensen scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs while walking two and striking out one in to pickup the win.

Freshman Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season. She went six innings and allowed nine runs, just two earned.

Dow was 3 for 3 in the opener while Richardson, Kingston and Gray each added two hits in the game one win for Coast Guard.

Sophomore Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) had three hits for Clark in the first game.

In the nightcap, Coast Guard trailed 3-1 before scoring five times in the fourth en route to the 7-3 win.

Clark scored three runs in the third taking advantage of a pair of Coast Guard errors with senior Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) adding an RBI single.

In the five-run fourth inning, all the runs were unearned. Kingston scored on a wild pitch and freshman Casey Cruzpino and Hvozdovdich came around on an error to give the Bears a 4-3 lead. Dow's RBI single gave the Bears a 5-3 lead before senior Erin Lisko added an RBI single for a 6-3 lead.

Coast Guard added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by Cruzpino.

Sorensen allowed five hits and a pair of earned runs while walking one and striking out three to even her record at 10-10 on the season.

Buckheit (1-6) took the loss for Clark. She went 3.2 innings and allowed five hits and six runs, just one earned run.

Freshman Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) pitched well in relief for Clark, working 2.1 innings and allowing just one run.

Clark will return to action on Sunday when they host Smith College for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
