Smith Powers Past Cougars In NEWMAC Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Smith College used some power hitting and some effective pitching as the Pioneers swept a New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader from Clark University on Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field.

Smith won the opener 4-0 and then clubbed three homeruns in the nightcap en route to a 10-2 win to complete the sweep.

With the two victories, the Pioneers improve to 7-13 overall and 3-9 in conference action, while the Cougars fall to 2-18 and 0-10 in league matchups.

The Scarlet and White will look to right the ship on Tuesday with a doubleheader at home against Wellesley beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Smith steps outside of NEWMAC play and travels to face Amherst College on Wednesday.

Game 1: Smith College 4, Clark University 0

In the opener, Pioneer hurler Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan.) scattered eight hits and struck out seven on her way to an impressive win in the circle.

Smith took a 1-0 lead in the third as Brittany Blokker (Seattle, Wash.) doubled to left center and then advanced to third on a stolen base. She eventually scored when Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y.) laid down a fantastic bunt that she was able to beat out for a hit and Blokker was able to scamper home.

The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the fourth beginning with an RBI single by Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn.). Her base hit was followed by back-to-back singles from Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J.) and Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J.) that not only loaded the bases but chased Clark starter Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) from the circle. Reliever Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) was greeted by a Blokker single through the left side that made the score 3-0.

Clark looked to be in prime position to get on the board in the fourth when Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) and Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) both singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Turner, however, was able to strike out both Annmarie Fransen (Belmont, Mass.) and Foley to escape the inning unscathed.

Smith added an insurance run in the top of the fifth as Tori Brown (New Market, Md.) blasted a pitch over the left field fence for her second homer of the season.

Both Blokker and Brown had two hits each for the Pioneers, while Giordano and Kushner both had an RBI.

Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) and Gonzalez each collected a pair of hits for the Cougars, who also got a double from West in her only at-bat.

Game 2: Smith College 10, Clark University 2

The Pioneers erupted for five runs in the fifth inning as part of their offensive attack that scored the game's final eight runs to post a 10-2 win.

After each team scored an unearned run in the first, Smith added another unearned run in the second when Kushner led off the inning with a double and then came home on a throwing error.

Clark evened the score in the bottom of the fourth with two outs. First Hayley Buckheit (Camden Hills, Maine) singled to center and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Fransen hit a slow roller to short and was able to leg out an infield single and with Buckheit going on contact, she was able to score without a throw.

Knotted at 2-2 heading into the fifth, Smith broke the game open with the aforementioned five runs. First, Turner smacked a two-run double to left that scored both Blokker and Giordano. The big blow however, came with two runners on as Snyder crushed a Buckheit offering over the left field fence for a 7-2 Pioneer edge.

Clark looked as if they might mount a rally in the sixth when Gonzalez singled to center and that was followed by a Kraytenberg single to center. Kraytenberg's hit hung up in the air, forcing Gonzalez to wait to see if it would be caught and when it wasn't Snyder was able to throw her out at second. Brown, who started for Smith was then able to record the final two outs of the inning to get out of the frame unharmed.

The Pioneers then added three runs in the sixth as Brown launched a two-run shot high and deep over the centerfield fence and then Snyder followed that up with a solo shot to center as well.

Snyder finished with three hits and four RBI, while Brown drove in three runs and tossed a complete game, allowing just one earned run.

Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.) took the loss for the Cougars, going four plus innings allowing five runs, only two of which were earned.
