Wellesley Pulls Away From Cougars

Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Wellesley College banged out 14 hits in the opening game and then took advantage of six Clark University errors in the nightcap as they swept a pair of New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball games on Tuesday afternoon at O'Brien Field.

The Blue won the first game 9-1 and then the nightcap, 7-2 to improve to 11-9 overall and 4-5 in conference contests. For Clark, meanwhile, they have now dropped 13 straight games and slip to 2-20 and remain winless in league games (0-12).

Wellesley returns to action on Wednesday with a home twinbill against Emerson while the Cougars play again on Friday when they travel to Babson. Both games start 3:00 p.m.

Game 1: Wellesley 9, Clark 1

Wellesley starter Madeline Bianchi (Lakeville, Minn.) handcuffed the Clark offense to the tune of just two hits over seven innings, striking out nine en route to the win.

With a the score tied at 1-1, the Blue broke the game open with two runs in the fifth and three runs in both the sixth and the seventh.

After Wellesley scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth on an Ashtyn Coleman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) single, Clark answered back in the bottom of the frame with a sacrifice fly from Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) that brought home Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.).

From that point on, it was all Wellesley beginning with an Amanda Manning (Durham, Calif.) RBI single and then a Maria Labouyer (Yuba City, Calif.)  run scoring triple in the fifth.

Abby Casey drove in a run in the sixth with a single and then two more unearned runs came home, making the score 6-1.

In the seventh, the Blue tacked on three more highlighted by a two-run double by Ines Borromeo (Muntinlupa, Philippines).

Clark starter Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) took the loss for the Cougars, yielding 14 hits and all nine runs – only seven of which we earned.

The Scarlet and White's two hits came from Mackey and Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.). For Wellesley, they had six different batters collect two hits including their six through nine hitters of Coleman, Borromeo, Mariah Philips (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Casey going a combined 8-for-14 with five runs scored and four RBI.

Game 2: Wellesley 7, Clark University 2

The Cougars committed a season-high six errors and Wellesley took full advantage, scoring five unearned runs off of Scarlet and White starter Sami West (Gonic, N.H.).

Her counterpart Julia Warner (Kenmore, Wash.) scattered ten hits and allowed two unearned runs in picking up her fourth win of the season.

Already ahead 2-0, the Blue pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by a Jaclyn Tsang (Manalapan, N.J.) two-run double to center.

Clark got back one run back in the fourth on a Gonzalez fielder's choice that pushed across Melanie Dusseault (Auburn, N.H.).

The teams traded sacrifice flies in the sixth with LeBouyer chasing home a run for Wellesley and then West doing the same for Clark. The Blue added another in the seventh on a Casey groundout to make up the final score.

Carly Bresee (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), who went hitless in the opener, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap, while LeBoyuer added two hits and two RBI.

Dusseault, Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) and Mackey all had two hits for the Cougars.
