Box Score Babson Park, Mass.— Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) and first-year Axel Brown (Little Compton, R.I.) each had two goals, and fellow first-year Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made a career-high 13 saves as Babson College defeated visiting Clark University, 10-5, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With its third consecutive victory, Babson is now 8-6 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while Clark drops to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC.
Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) scored once and added a game-high three assists, and classmate Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) added a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) led all players with nine ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Connor Hinton (Florham Park, N.J.) and first-year Connor Maloney (Hopkinton, Mass.) combined to win 9-of-13 face-offs.
Rob Holden (East Longmeadow, Mass.) had two goals and one assist, while Nick Johnson (Amherst, Mass.), the league's third-leading scorer, finished with one goal and two assists to tie the single season assist mark (35) for the Cougars.
Ryan Marsh (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) went 10-of-18 at the face-off X, and Matthew Sullivan (Brunswick, Maine) was one of three players to finish with four ground balls to go along with a team-high two caused turnovers.
Doten scored the only goal of the first quarter at the 7:22 mark, and first-year Taylor Segreti (North Potomac, Md.) notched his eighth tally of the year to give the Green and White a 2-0 edge with 11:36 to go in the second.
Holden converted a feed from Johnson to cut the Clark deficit in half 39 seconds later, but senior Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored off a pass from Brown to make it 3-1 with 8:39 to go in the period. The Cougars got back within one at the half on a man-up goal by Darius Jagminas (East Greenwich, R.I.) 4:20 before the break.
The Beavers created some separation by scoring the first three markers of the third quarter. Doten set up Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) and Low to make it 5-2 with 7:06 left in the stanza. Brown followed with his first goal of the day with 2:51 left in the frame put the Green and White a four-goal lead.
Clark responded though, scoring three straight goals in the span of 2:14 to get back within a goal. Andrew Myhre (Middlebury, Vt.) tallied a man-up goal with five seconds left in the third, and Johnson and Holden notched back-to-back goals just 14 seconds apart as the Cougars made it 6-5 with 12:51 to go in the fourth.
Babson wasted little time answering as Low converted a feed from Doten 24 seconds later to start a run of four unanswered goals to close the game. Matthew Logan (Downingtown, Pa.) scored off a pass from Coan to make it 8-5 at the 10:43 mark, and Brown followed with his second tally of the day to push the lead to four with 9:55 left. Coan capped the scoring with his 12th marker of the season with just under two minutes remaining.
Shapiro made 11 of his 13 saves over the final three quarters for the Green and White, while sophomore Drew Riopelle-Tyrrell (Northville, Mich.) came up with 14 saves for Clark.
The Beavers went 22-for-24 on clear opportunities and held a 54-32 edge in shots on the afternoon.
The Cougars, which committed 23 turnovers, held a 38-33 edge in ground balls and went 10-for-12 on clear chances.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson travels to Emerson at 6 p.m., while Clark hosts Springfield at 7 p.m.
