Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Springfield College had a trio of players notch three goals and the visiting Pride used two offensive scoring spurts to put away Clark University 13-7, in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) lacrosse action on Wednesday night.
The win for Springfield is their fourth straight since losing to Babson back on March 28 as they improve to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in league contests. In those four games since their first conference loss in 57 games, the Pride have outscored its opponents 62-24.
For the Cougars, meanwhile, they drop their second straight game to slip back to .500 at 7-7. A year removed from the program's first-ever postseason berth, the Scarlet and White were officially eliminated from postseason play with the loss.
Springfield's two offensive explosions spoiled a record-breaking night for Clark sophomore attackman Nick Johnson (Amherst, Mass.), who not only set the school's single season assist record with 39 – surpassing the mark of 35 set by Joe Figler in 1999 – but became just the second player in school history to reach the 60-point plateau in a season.
The Pride scored the first four goals of the game in a little less than nine minutes, including the first two from Brendan Boss. After Tony Laguerre scored with 6:10 to go into the opening quarter, Clark finally got on the board when Johnson found Jon Spencer (Hollis, N.H.) for his fourth goal of the season 50 seconds later.
Springfield registered a fifth goal before the first period ended when Kevin Dean took a feed from Dylan Sheehan, making the score, 5-1. They then opened the second period up with Bryce Serriello's 25th marker of the year.
Clark picked up a little momentum when both Johnson and Jack Goracy (Lumberton, N.J.) scored unassisted goals 45 seconds apart to make the 6-3.
Sheehan teamed up with Laguerre for a man-up Pride tally with seven minutes to go in the half but neither team found the back of the net the rest of the frame.
Things changed drastically in the third as Springfield scored four goals in less than three minutes to take control of the game. Boss, Laguerre, Serriello and James Conley all tickled the twine as the Pride found themselves ahead 11-3.
The Cougars scored three straight to close the gap as Darius Jagminas (Greenwich, R.I.) scored consecutive goals and then Johnson added another score with 2:34 left in the third.
Springfield erased any thoughts of a comeback with the first two goals of the fourth off the sticks of Conley and another man-up score from Serriello.
Johnson wrapped up his night finding Rob Holden (East Longmeadow, Mass.) on with a terrific pass on a restart, pushing Holden's career point total to 99.
Mark Gonzalez was dominant at the faceoff X for Springfield, going 19-for-24 and scooping up a game-high 16 groundballs.
Boss, Laguerre and Serriello all finished with hat tricks, while Sheehan – the league's leading scorer – handed out four assists.
Johnson, meanwhile, racked up two goals and four assists and Jagminas added two. Drew Riopelle-Tyrrell (Northville, Mich.) totaled 17 saves and a team-best six groundballs for Clark.
The Cougars will wrap up the 2015 season on Saturday with a home game against Emerson. Faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
