Cougars Drop Regular Season Finale; Will Host Wheaton On Saturday

New London, Conn. – Host Coast Guard Academy breezed to a 6-1 win over Clark University on Wednesday afternoon in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis action.

The win for Bears locks up a trip to the conference semifinals on Saturday, May 2 where they will face second-seeded MIT at 3:00 p.m.

For the Cougars meanwhile, they will now play host to Wheaton College in a quarterfinal match this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The winner of that match will travel to Babson on Saturday, May 2 for a semifinal showdown with the top-seeded Beavers.

In today's match, Clark (5-10) got its lone point of the afternoon at No. 1 doubles where Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) edged out Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna, 9-8.

The Scarlet and White had excellent chances at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to pick up victories but in both instances, Coast Guard was able to bounce back. First at No. 1, Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) had little trouble in the first set, taking it 6-0 over Robert Renfrow but Renfrow rallied to win the final two set, 7-6, 6-4.

At No. 3, Pinoargote scored a 6-1 win in the opening set but Fortna raced back, winning the last two by identical 6-3 scores.
