Dominant Pitching Shuts Down Cougars In Season Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Cambridge, Mass. – MIT senior Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich.) became the program's third pitcher to toss a perfect game as the Engineers concluded their regular season slate with a pair of 8-0 victories against Clark University on Saturday afternoon at Briggs Field in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

With a pair of wins, Tech bumps its record to 22-6 overall and 16-2 in conference play, while the Cougars dip to 2-26 and 0-18.

Fodor, who pitched the second game of the doubleheader, retired 15 consecutive batters over five innings of work, while recording five strikeouts. The victory marked her ninth complete game of the season – sixth in conference play – and third shutout.

MIT recorded a pair of four-run innings in the second contest to secure a victory as freshman Amanda Lee (Saratoga, Calif.) recorded two RBI, while Fodor, senior Karly McLaughlin (Edwardsville, Ill.) and Ali Trueworthy (Rochester, N.H.) each drove in one run. Lee jumpstarted the Engineers' offense in the bottom of the first with a RBI single to right field, which sent Jasmin Joseph (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Natalie Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) to the dish. Two batters later, McLaughlin registered her initial triple of the season, driving in Lee. McLaughlin crossed home plate during the next-at bat when Fodor reached first base on an error by the pitcher.

In the bottom of the third, Tori Jensen (Holliston, Mass.), sophomores Monica Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) and Mackenzie Donnelly (Helena, Mont.), and Trueworthy all crossed home plate, doubling Tech's advantage to eight runs. Fodor sealed the win for the Cardinal and Gray by forcing two pop-outs in the top of the fourth, along with a ground out to Lee at shortstop. In the fifth, Fodor completed the perfect game by forcing Clark's final batter to ground out to Monica Shifflet at third base.

The win stretched Fodor's record to 15-3 in the circle – second most wins by a pitcher in a single-season. Clark freshman Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) suffered her fourth loss of the season, while allowing eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits over two and two-third innings of work.

Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead to commence the first contest before adding four runs in the bottom half of the second, which provided the hosts with a 6-0 advantage. Shifflet, Joseph, Jensen and Lee each drove in one run during the bottom half of the sixth.

Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) pushed the Engineers ahead, 7-0, in the bottom of the fifth with a double through the right side that sent Jensen to the dish. Lee concluded the contest during the bottom of the sixth when she sent Joseph home from second base with a double through the left side.

Marshall picked up her 11th win in the circle during the first game and recorded 10 strikeouts over five innings of work. Deanna Delgado (Miami, Fla.) pitched the top of the sixth for MIT and allowed just one hit against three batters.

Clark senior Hayley Buckheit (Camden, Maine) sustained her eighth loss of the season, allowing six runs (five earned) and seven hits over two innings of work.

MIT, which will be the second seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament, will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 28 when they host a semifinal contest at Briggs Field.
