Box Score 3 Hartford, Conn. – Clark University took a huge step forward in announcing itself as possibly a player on the New England volleyball landscape with its perfect 3-0 record at the Trinity College Invitational held over the weekend.
On Friday, the Cougars topped Westfield State, 3-0 and then on Saturday they cruised to a pair of 3-0 victories over host Trinity College and Eastern Connecticut State.
With their weekend of sweeps, the Scarlet and White improve to 7-0 in advance of their three matches next week beginning with the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on the road at Smith College on Tuesday.
The 7-0 start, meanwhile is the best since the 1983 team opened up their campaign 12-0 en route to a school-record 30 wins.
Clark 3, Westfield State 0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-16)
Clark had little trouble with the Owls, breezing to a relatively easy win with a balanced offensive attack.
Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) finished with 13 kills and nine digs, while Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Courtney Pharr (Seattle, Wash.) totaled 11 and ten kills, respectively.
Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) racked up 16 digs in the win, while Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) added 29 assists.
Clark University 3, Trinity College 0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-23)
The Scarlet and White showed their ability close out as each of the three sets were tightly contested.
Ramos was again the offensive star for Clark, registering a double-double with 12 kills and a match-high 18 digs.
Freshman Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) chipped in with ten kills of her own and Webb was strong again, totaling 21 assists and nine digs.
Cattaneo led the charge defensively, notching 16 more digs and a pair of service aces.
Clark University 3, Eastern Connecticut State 0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-12)
Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, Calif.) collected a match-best 21 digs as the Cougars wrapped up the weekend with an easy 3-0 win.
Ramos banged down 17 kills and added 12 digs for another double-double, while Webb doled out 32 more assists.
Clark's service game was hot all match long, picking up 11 along the way led by Pharr's four and Webb's three.
Glass-Smythe provided 15 digs defensively for the Scarlet and White.
