Box Score Worcester, Mass. – In a game that saw both teams have chances to win, Clark University and Smith College played to a 1-1 tie on Friday evening in the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer opener for both teams.
For Clark, they have now registered ties in two of their last three games and are 2-3-2 overall, while the Pioneers now sit at 3-2-1.
The first big scoring chance of the game came off the foot of Clark's Kara Fischer (Belmont, Mass.) in the 16th minute when she took a feed between defenders near the top of the box, but her attempt was caught by Pioneer netminder Camryn Biasin (Lee, Mass.).
Alex Easton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had the best chance for the Cougars to get on the board in the first half when her rocket to the left side of the goal after a Nikki Feinberg (San Antonio, Texas) corner kick, was denied by a diving Biasin in the 39th minute.
Smith actually broke through in the scoring column first midway through the second half when Jordan Issacs (Weston, Conn.) took a long ball from Gigi Rogers (Colt's Neck, N.J.) and snuck a shot by Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) into the lower left corner of the goal at 62:17.
The Cougars knotted the game in the 74th minute when Fischer connected with Haley Connors (Burrillville, R.I.) for her second career score. Fischer took a throw-in with a defender on her back, spun and sent a ball into the box that landed right at Connor's foot and she slipped it by Biasin.
Smith had a great chance to go back ahead in the 81st minute when Isaacs fired a shot but it banged off the crossbar.
The best scoring chance in the extra session for either team came in the 109th minute when Isaacs made some moves around a few defenders but her attempt was snuffed out by Caitland Baxter (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).
Even though Smith held an 18-13 edge in shots, everything else was even. Each team had five corner kicks and both Biasin and Paolini made four saves apiece.
Clark will return to action on Monday when they visit Western Connecticut State at 6:00 p.m. while the Pioneers are off until they visit Babson College next Saturday.
