Cougars Top Lyons 3-0 To Remain Undefeated

Box Score

South Hadley, Mass. – Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) finished with a match-high 15 kills and Clark University remained undefeated with a 3-0 win over Mount Holyoke in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Thursday night. Game scores were 25-17, 25-16 and finally, 25-18.

The win for the Cougars pushes their record to 11-0 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league contests, while the Lyons slip to 5-5 but 0-4 in conference contests.

In addition to Glass-Smythe, Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) racked up ten kills of her own and Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) was stellar again, totaling 38 assists – her eighth match this season with 30 or more helpers.

Mia Cattaneo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) totaled 12 digs for Clark to lead the defensive effort for the Scarlet and White.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair until the Cougars recorded ten of the final 13 points to secure the win. Glass-Smythe was huge in the frame, hammering down six kills while Webb was spectacular as well, dishing out 12 helpers as the Scarlet and White registered 14 kills in the set.

Clark got hot in the second set as they hit .438 and they pounces, opening up a 7-1 advantage behind multiple errors by the Lyons and three kills from Mercado.

A kill from Jamesa Allen helped marginalize the gap (13-5), but Clark found itself with a 20-14 lead after another Mercado kill. Mount Holyoke got kills from Joy Maran and Allen down the stretch, but the Cougars closed out the set on a kill from Glass-Smythe and attacking errors by the home team.

Mount Holyoke made a run in the third set, jumping out to a 4-1 early lead. The Lyons continued to hold the advantage as an outstanding block by Allen made it a 12-8 score. A block by Sweeting a few points later kept the score in MHC's favor, but an 11-0 run turned the tides for Clark as it held a 23-15 lead.

The Lyons pulled back in as kills from Sarah Caggiano and Maran, along with a service ace from Sweeting made it 23-18, but a kill and ace from junior right side Tori Whitney (Sunderland, Mass.) closed out the set and match.

Clark is next in action on Saturday when they take part in an extremely challenging tri-match at Babson. The Cougars face the host Beavers at 12:00 p.m. before finishing off their day with a match against Amherst College at 2:00 p.m.
