Coast Guard Blanks Clark, 1-0

Box Score

New London, Conn. - A first half goal by sophomore Luke Telang held up for Coast Guard and the Bears posted 1-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday.

With the win the Bears snap a five game losing streak, improving to 2-7-0 overall and 1-1-0 in NEWMAC play. The Cougars drop to 2-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference competition.

Coast Guard tested goalkeeper Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) early in the game as freshman Noah Harper sent a cross in from the right side to the center of the Clark penalty box. Senior Lucas Benedetto challenged Maguire for the cross but the goalkeeper was able to punch the ball out of danger.

Harper next lined up for a corner kick which he played into the Cougars box. The ball bounced before reaching senior Ricky Davies who fired a shot towards goal, but was blocked by a Clark defender.

Benedetto looked to be in for the first goal of the game as he found space down the right side and was in one on one with Maguire. Benedetto put a shot on goal but Maguire dove to his right and denied the attempt.

Clark mounted an attack midway through the half when Alberto Polo-Herrera (Arlington, Va.) found junior Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) on the left side. Blais took a touch and fired a hard shot at goalkeeper William Bragaw. Bragaw knocked down the shot and collected the rebound before the Cougars could pounce on the rebound.

The Bears broke through finally at the 21:19 mark when Ryan Dandan found Telang at the top of the Clark box. Telang then hit a shot to the left corner that curled away from a diving Maguire and gave Coast Guard a 1-0 lead.

The game was almost 2-0 before the half when junior Kyle Phillips tracked down an errant clear by the Cougars. Phillips took a touch and then fired a low shot the ricocheted off a Clark defender catching Maguire moving the wrong direction. The ball however rolled just to the outside of the post going out for a corner kick.

In the second half the Bears continued to create opportunities as Brad McNell worked forward from his left back position and sent a cross to the back post. Patrick Palermo slid in for the cross but could not catch up to it as it was just out of his reach.

Bragaw earned his first win and shutout of his collegiate career for the Bears while Maguire made three saves in net for the Cougars.
Clark is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to the University of New England for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
