Cougars Cruise To 8-2 Win Over Hawks

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Clark University erupted for six first half goals and the host Cougars christened their remodeled playing facility with an 8-2 win over Becker College in non-league field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

The win for the Scarlet and White evens their record at 1-1, while the visiting Hawks (0-3) are still searching for their first win under new head coach Kyla Dickson.

Freshman Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) wasted little time getting into the scoring column when she sent a shot past Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.) just 1:15 into the contest off of a feed from Maria Manning (Manchester, N.H.).

Things stayed that way for a while until Megan Tighe (Simsbury, Conn.) connected with Olivia Cotton (Northampton, Mass.) at 14:35, giving Clark a 2-0 lead.

That advantage continued to grow as less than 30 seconds later, Barksdale turned into the playmaker, setting up Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) for her first marker of the afternoon.

The score moved to 4-0 when Haley Mahan (Bedford, N.H.) recorded an unassisted tally and Mackey was at it again, this time with help from Alyssa Williams (New Sharon, Maine).

Becker finally got on the board when Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine) set up Katherine Dimascio (Braintree, Mass.) for the Hawks' first goal of the season.

The Cougars tacked on one more score before halftime, with the freshmen tandem of Barksdale and Mikela Nolin (Cumberland, Maine) teaming up for Nolin's first career goal as the half wound down.

Ahead 6-1, Mackey rattled the back of the cage early in the second half with help from Julia Baud (Utrecht, Netherlands) and then Barksdale closed out the scoring for the hosts with her second marker of the afternoon.

Becker did get another goal – this one the first of the career for Storey - when she banged home a pass from Brittany Bebeau (Harrisville, R.I.).

Clark held a 22-8 edge in shots for the game, while each team had seven penalty corners each.

Gallo turned aside 14 shots in between the pipes for the visitors – her third straight game this season with 12 or more saves.

The three-headed goalkeeping monster of Christine Tinsman (Prairie Village, Kan.), Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) and Gaby Deangelis (Bayville, N.Y.) all played for the Cougars, but only need to make three combined saves.

Mackey notched her third career hat trick in the win, while Barksdale finished with two goals and two assists.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday with the Scarlet and white hosting Nichols and the Hawks visiting Mount Ida.
