Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Vassar College, ranked 20th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Poll, opened up the spring portion of its 2016 schedule with a 9-0 win over Clark University in non-league men's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at Walker Field House.
With the win, the Brewers improve 2-2, while the Cougars are now 1-2 in advance of their annual Spring Break trip in the greater Orlando, Fla. area that begins in less than three weeks.
Vassar raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and never looked back. Clark's No. 1 tandem of Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) dropped their match to Daniel Cooper and Nick Zuczek, 8-3.
That was followed by Teodor Nicola (Bucharest, Romania) and Jimmy Keogh (Worcester, Mass.) getting tripped up at No. 3 by Nick Lee and Nick Litsky, 8-2.
The Brewers then completed the doubles sweep with Alexander Luckmann and Evan Udine moving past the Clark combination of Andrey Samodaev (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Fla.), 8-2 at No. 2.
Ahead 3-0, Vassar continued its control of the match in singles action beginning with Juan Felipe Laso notching a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Siegel at No. 4 and Cooper making quick work of Pinoargote, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
With the match in hand, the Brewers saw Udine top Pinkney, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Litsky record a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Samodaev at No. 1.
They completed the sweep with Lee outlasting Nicola at No. 5, 7-5, 6-1 and Sha Huang working to best Mateo Gomez (Bogota, Colombia), 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6.
The Cougars will return to action when they embark on their Florida trip on Friday, March 4 against Capital College.
