Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Behind a pair of stellar pitching performances, visiting MIT extended their winning streak over Clark University to seven straight games with a doubleheader sweep over the Scarlet and White on Saturday afternoon at O'Brien Field in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action.
The Engineers now sit at 7-5 and 2-0 in league play, while the Cougars are 6-11 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Clark will return to the diamond on Tuesday with a home twinbill against Anna Maria. MIT is off until Thursday when they welcome Williams to Cambridge.
Game 1: MIT 8, Clark University 0
Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) dazzled in the circle for the Engineers, retiring the first 13 batters she faced enroute to a one-hit gem with 11 strikeouts.
The Engineers scored a run in the first on an Amber Lee (Saratoga, Calif.) double and that was more than enough for Marshall, who only allowed an Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) single to left with one out in the fifth.
Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) was actually pitching well herself having given up just two hits through five.
MIT tacked on two runs in the sixth when they strung together four hits capped by an Ali Trueworthy (Rochester, N.H.) two-run double.
The Engineers then erupted for four more in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single up the middle by Zoe Hinton (Aurora, Colo.).
Four different Engineers had two hits, led by Hinton's two hits and two RBI and two hits and two runs scored from Monica Shifflet (Poway, Calif.).
Game 2: MIT 6, Clark University 0
In the nightcap, the visitors scored runs in each of the first three innings to build an insurmountable lead. After pushing across an unearned run in the top of the first, MIT scored two more in the second on a Katherine Shade (Glencoe, Ill.) double to left.
Ahead 3-0, the Engineers kept the pressure on, adding two more in the third when Shifflet reached on an error and then scored on a Lee triple to center. Lee then scampered home on a wild pitch that chased starter Sami West (Rochester, N.H.) after two plus innings of work.
Clark had a great chance to get runs in the bottom of the first when they put runners on first and second with one out, but MIT hurler Amber VanHemel (Coconut Creek, Fla.) retired the next two batters in succession to end the threat.
Van Hemel was strong in the circle for the Engineers, going the first four innings, yielding just two hits with four strikeouts.
Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, Mass.) came in and tossed two strong innings of relief and Deanna Delgado (Miami, Fla.) and gave up one hit in her lone inning of work.
Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) had two hits for the Cougars in the second game, while Danielle Tesler (Stoughton, Mass.) had the other.
